After Sleeve Gastrectomy...the Journey Begins!

Recommended Posts

Well, I did it! I thought about doing it a couple of years ago, but then put the idea on the back burner. Then in November 2011, the idea came forward again and here I am four days post op, at home, and thinking about the road ahead. I had my surgery in NC at Rex Hospital by Dr. Paul Enochs. During the weeks leading to the surgery, I was never really scared or nervous. But now that the surgery is over, I am feeling a little bit of those things. I don't want to fail. Who does? But this is a lot to get used to. Well, I know I just have to set small goals and work toward them everyday. Otherwise, I will be overwhelmed. To anyone considering the surgery, just know that the surgery part is easy...at least, that's how I feel so far.

Just do as your doctor says, and don't try to eat or drink anything you aren't cleared for and you will be fine! Time will fly by and you will be eating solid food again before you know it! Good luck on your journey. We are here to answer any questions for you!

I am in Burlington. I have had my first appointment with Dr. Bruce from Carolina Bariatric Specialists. I am very excited to get this show on the road. Have all of my external pre-op appointments scheduled but the sleep study. Can I ask why you chose the sleeve?

Hi Jenny! Congrats on your decision!

I am almost 3 months in now and do not regret a thing. I was unsure about which procedure I wanted when I first went in for my consult. I didn't even realize the sleeve was an option until Dr. Enochs asked. So I said, bypass. I went home and googled the sleeve, and thought it would suit me. I was scared of bypass because of all the talk you hear about dumping, malabsoprtion, hair loss, excessive loose skin, etc. With the sleeve, you absorb more of your nutrition, so it cuts down on some of those problems. I also only had 80 pounds to lose (lots of comorbidities), but if I had more than that, I think I would have chosen bypass. You have a larger window of opportunity to lose with bypass. I guess it boils down to what makes you comfortable and what will work with your lifestyle for optimum success! Good luck!

I have 185 to lose. I am not entirely sure the sleeve is the best option. I felt like it was, because weight loss was slower, therefore less loose skin hopefully. But I don't know if 185 lbs seems unrealistic with the sleeve.

Also, I am very recently an ex-smoker of 20 yrs (two weeks), which I understand can create MAJOR complications with the GBP surgery. I think that was one of our reasons for leaning toward the vsg.

Jenngirl,

it is not unrealic, there are some people on the board who have to lose around that amount too. There also is a section/thread on the board with groups of people having to lose wt like 50 lbs. 100 lbs. etc.

You are capable of definitely capable to lose 185 lbs with the proper "work and diligence, willpower" that we all must have.

please don't give up before you started. It will take awhile to get to your final destination, make small goals, and you WILL be successful

best of luck

kathy

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
