Has this happened to anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

On May 13th I had my first fill. Here's what has happened since:

May 13: I could drink liquids just as before the fill.

May 14: Drinking caused some discomfort. I slowed my drinking down to small sips of warm liquids and was ok.

May 15 and 16: I tried some soft foods but it caused pain so I went back to liquids.

May 17,18 : I could eat mushies in the evening, but could only drink warm liquids very slowly in the am.

May 19th: In the evening, I tried a cracker. I chewed the heck out of it. It got stuck for 20 minutes. I slimed...but I never pb'd. Then, the pain went away and the cracker went down.

May 20th and 21: All of a sudden, I can eat anything...any amount...just like before my fill. Last night, I had chicken and bread with no problem!

I had started to consider a slight unfill...now I think I need another fill...

Did I hurt my band? Have I sprung a leak? :D

Has this happened to anyone else?

Any advice, suggestions, experience, comments appreciated!

Marsha

Marsha -

I doubt you have done anything to your band. It sounds as though you are one of those people who has a very sensitive and finicky stomach, and you are going to have to be very, very, very careful after your adjustments to give your stomach time to settle down. Sounds like it just took some time for your stomach to get over the trauma of being squeezed.

In addition to the initial tightness caused by the trauma of a fill, the restriction we feel will vary from day to day. It is never good to take the band for granted because it hasn't given us any problems - whenever I do that, I am reminded in a hurry that YES, I am banded, YES, I have restriction, and YES, I ALWAYS have to chew well and eat slowly!!

When you go for your next fill, be sure to stay on liquids for a week - the tighter you go, the more likely your stomach will react poorly (like with your first fill), and take things super slow.

Thanks Donali! I always value your advice and you've made me feel a little better!

I was hoping that maybe the tightness was due to swelling. Actually, I was getting used to it and was thinking it might be very close to perfect fill (why would I think I'd be the one with a perfect first fill?) I just got concerned when I lost the restriction completely over the last 2 days.

BTW, I noticed how very close you are to the century mark!

:D :D :D :D CONGRADULATIONS!

Thanks again,

Marsha

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
