A New Sleeve For Dooter

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I had trouble with the hospital internet, so now that I'm back at the hotel, this is the first chance i've had to check in. Surgery went well, my hernia fixed as well. I've been having a recurring pain that feels like a vise has gripped my stomach then releases. The hospital doc says that some people get this and some don't. Darn. Should go away soon. I did spend the first night and morning throwing up. I was strict NPO until the upper g.i. the next morning, so a bunch of junk kept collecting in my throat while i slept. Then I'd wake up and swallow and immediately hurl. Dr. Kim assured me I didn't bust anything. Passed the leak test and then right away on to sip sip walk walk...ad nauseum. I just now tried to take a gas x strip to see if that would relieve any of my discomforts...well....it came back up too. :s Ok...note to self. Time to walk....then maybe a nap as a reward... ;) We were going to leave Dallas for albuquerque on Friday, but now I'm thinking Monday. This is a pretty hard ride, but I'm glad to be on the other side of the major hump. (That WAS the major hump, right???)

Sorry you are off to a rough start. Just remember it gets easier every day. Especially as you see the scale go down and the clothes get worse. You'll realize this was all worth it. If it's not a problem I would say definitely stay with your mom the few extra days and let her pamper you!

Good luck. And sip sip sip.

My sleeve was Monday too and I had (have) all the same symptoms and issues! Why a rough road! Sf Popsicles have helped get my fluids in because I can't. Seem to drink more than a teaspoon of water! Now being told only drink distiller Water and warm peppermint tea, and broth. So hope that works! Having my back rubbed to get out the burps is great too! Lots to learn and go through and the silver lining is this will pass and we will feel normal again soon! Even though I cried in pain all night last night, I don't regret it!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
