No Weight Loss Since Surgery

Recommended Posts

So I was sleeved on the 24th of january, exactly 3 weeks ago.

I weighed myself as soon as I got back from the hospital, and I was 360 lbs. Today I checked the scale, and I'm 361 lbs.

I know a lot of people START stalling at 3 weeks out after a good amount of weight loss, but did anyone else not loose weight immediately after surgery for this long? I'm kind of starting to get worried.

I have a friend with Type 2 diabetes and she didn't lose for a long time after. She had to talk to her PCP and they found the reason why. Do you have any underlying health issues that could have you not losing?

not that I'm aware of? I don't have diabetes or thyroid problems, was tested for all that. As far as I know, sleep apnea is the worst thing I have... but even that is very very minor, it's only partial.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your friend's reason for not losing?

It was the type 2. They gave her some kind of shot that she takes regularly and she is loosing fine now.

hmm ok.. maybe I developed type 2 while in the hospital :tongue2:

seriously though... guess I'll start trying to pay attention and see if I might be showing symptoms of something else going wrong.

I was just throwing that out there to let you know about my friend. I would certainly talk to your PCP.

Are you keeping a food diary? How many calories are you having per day? Have you talked to your surgeon? Any exercise? Even a 5 min walk is a start to build on.

yeah I had a two week check up with him. I've lost 30 lbs since my two week pre-op diet, and he's happy with the loss so far.

I get between 400 and 700 calories a day and between 30 and 60 Protein according to my food tracker.

I actually just started walking last night, went for 20 min. Will try to do that every day... Surgeon said I can do any exercise I feel up to.

I would suggest increasing your Protein, make sure you get 70g or more per day. That's what my doctor had me reaching for from day one. Once I started hitting 75-80g consistently, the scale started to budge. Are you counting your carbs as well? My limit right now is 40g per day. And drink fluids! Dehydration will slow down your metabolism more. Your minimum should be 64oz per day, if not more. For me, the more I drink, the more I lose. And the exercise is critical. Do what you can now and build up. I started out with a few laps around the block the first week, and now I'm doing about 1.5 miles in 45min every day. Not to mention the walking helps with gas/constipation and has made the general tummy tenderness get better.

It will happen for you! Have faith!

If your Dr is ok with your weight loss so far, then I think you're fine. 30 lbs is a good chunk of weight loss and those of us who lose some before surgery sometimes lose a little slower, because we don't have the big drop after surgery. That may have started your 3 wk stall a little early? Your body is catching up right now, and you could be losing inches. Patience is the hardest part of this, I always say I think my patience lived in the part of my tummy that was removed haha. Hang in there!

:)

Everyone is so different. I didn't have a pre op diet and had surgery on Jan. 10. I came home 8 lbs heavier than the day of surgery. I lost that plus an additional 35 by my 3 week follow up. I would encourage you to drink and get Protein in but I NEVER met my Water goal during this time. Rarely met my protein goal. I still struggle with both but I am steadily losing. You had a great loss with your pre op. I would say if your surgeon is happy, you should be happy. :smile1: If there was a concern, I'm sure h/she would let you know. Sounds like you're doing great!

I did not start loosing weight until I went back to work, 3 weeks after surgery. I also increased my Protein to about 80g a day, but staying between 600-1000 calories a day. Give that a try, Since going back to work on 1/9/12, I have lost 13 pounds.

Just a quick update, been a little over 4 weeks and I've actually gained 2 lbs since I made this topic.

calories are between 600 and 800 / day. I DEFINITELY feel restriction... we went out to eat last week, and normally I'd eat a whole sandwich, plus a side of fries and half an appetizer..

This time, all I could eat was half of the meat on the sandwhich.

Apparently I'm immune to calorie deficits. :/

Well, at least we're in good company. I've only lost 7 lbs since surgery. I'll be two week post op. I've always been a slow loser. I have hypothyroidism and I think after all the years of yo-yo dieting my metabolism is screwed up.

We have to start losing soon. It's a mathematical guarantee. Sometimes our bodies go kicking and screaming but, we'll get there.

Keep doing what you're doing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
