Surgey Was On 2-6. Just Some Questions

Recommended Posts

Hi. I just had surgery on Monday and I have some questions. I am finding it hard to get more than 30

Ounces of fluids in me a day. Is this normal 4 days later. And I years for something other than juice and Protein Shakes and chicken broth. Also my taste buds seemed to have changed. I bought

Crystal light lemonade cause it's my favorite and now I can't stand the taste. So weird. Any tips or things you did during liquid diet. Is yogurt allowed? This has been a tough week but I think ok doing well so far. Excited for the future.

I don't have any tips for you but I am in the same boat. My surgery was on the 7th and things don't taste the same to me either. I normally love crystal light lemonade. I asked for some at the hospital and it didn't even taste like lemonade to me. I tried some lime Jello and the same thing. I have been drinking fuzzy navel Protein Drinks and they don't really taste great. I am thinking about starting the next stage and try drinking the full liquids. I'm not sure what to do but I need to take more in.

Funny you should mention the CL ... I was the same way post-op. Took me about a year to start drinking it again. Try other flavors - you may be surprised to find things you didn't like before are now YUMMY! Another trick is to add SF flavorings to your Protein shakes.

Hydration is the most important things those first few weeks. Try to get in Protein, but don't obsess about it if you can't. I was allowed yogurt on day 3, but some surgeons say no-way. You should really call your surgeon to find out.

Good luck ... the future is pretty exciting isn't it?

Yes, your taste perceptions do change a little after surgery. I can't explain it, don't know why it happens. But it happened to me and I posted the same thing on this forum. The first 5-6 days I was miserable because I could not stand the taste of ANYTHING, even though I had tried most things during the 2-week pre-op diet and was fine with them then. But around days 7-8 it started to come back and things tasted much better after that.

Best of luck!

hi - i also had my taste buds change a little after the sleeve.

But back in 1998 i had breast CA. (TMI) Changes during chemo -all that used to taste good were now yeah . so we're talking about a month of terrible tasting yeah, sure enough things did finally get better with my taste buds, back to normal , unfortunately back to normal was loving all those yummy fattening food!

thankfully with the assistance of my new best friend the sleeve, i have started a new healthier life - losing weight a day at a time.

best

I felt like all the crap the first 7 days, and had issues with ingesting anything.

Half way through day 7 it was like the heavens parted and rainbows and butterflies flew down from the sky and I could drink as much as I wanted.

Congrats on your sleeve!! Your taste buds def can change! Your stomach may be a lil swollen still. I was sleeved on Jan 25th and a few days out could drink alot. You should be able to eat yogurt but call your doc to make sure. =)

I was also sleeved on Feb 6th. I'm having the hardest time drinking anything but Water. I can't stand the sweet taste in everything. I think I'll try some herbal tea. From what I'm reading here, I think if we can keep up as much as possible w Water, the rest will follow. I keep thinking, next week will be better.

It's so wonderful to hear what everyone has to say. The board is a real comfort!

It is funny how your tastes change after the surgery. Even from day to day after surgery. I mentioned, quite casually to my husband how much I like the additive "Mio" that you put in Water to flavor it, and he went out and bought like ten containers of it. A couple days later, I couldn't stand the taste of it anymore, and haven't used it since! Tastes WAY to sweet for me. Best tip I can give you is to experiment..... try drinking your water iced, if that doesn't sit well, try room temp water, maybe flavored water, maybe some kind of fruit juice. Or iced tea, there are so many flavors of tea now. Just keep trying different things and you are bound to hit on one that your sleeve will tolerate and you will like soon. I ended up drinking sugar free Lipton Citrus flavored Green Tea. It still tastes good to me 8 months after my surgery! But it took me a couple of weeks trying different things to get there. And remember, it is a journey. We don't get there the first day or even the first week. It is a whole new life style, one that I struggle with some days, but still an exciting journey!

I've found that herbal tea was great for me in the first week. It was so warm and soothing to my sleeve. Chamomile is my fave. =)

I'm really digging some sugar free apple cider my wife and I found at the Big Store (Wal-Mart)...... It tastes good to me and the warmth seems to help the pouch.

The apple cider is yummy. I also like the Vitamin Water 0 calories I perfer the apple pear flavored. I also found packets from target (target brand) that are the same flavor you can add to a bottle of water like crystal light I have a special K2) every dayI suggest NO matter what everyone else is doing...follow your doctors orders! You can make it...I didnt get 64 ounces of Fluid in until like 4 months out...just work at it everyday and do what you can. I think 40 is great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
