I'm scheduled for my sleeve on 02/29/12. Pre-op diet starts on 02/15/12 and I can't stop eating bad things. My insurance required me to go through the rigorous 6 month process and I never gained any weight, but now I’m gaining. Last minutes fears I suspect, but is this a sign this isn’t meant for me? After I got my date yesterday I haven’t been able to think about anything but food, and how I am I going to do this? I wish I had someone here with me who knew what I was going through, but I don’t. Just this. Sorry for venting. :/

It's called "Last Meal Syndrome" ... and for some of us, it was LOTS of "last meals".

For me, it was saying goodbye to the only relationship I knew with food. Eat it, enjoy it, and eat again. I wanted to have all those "last" tastes before I ate like a bird. Silly and makes no sense, but it was my food funeral.

The good thing is that I still enjoy food. I only eat the things I like. If I take a bite and don't like it, I don't eat anymore. I only have so much space & it darn well bbetter taste good!

So, if you gain between your approval and surgery, will they go back and deny you? Do you have another pre-surgery weigh-in that is sent to your insurance? Your pre-op diet will help take a few pounds off.

Keep your chin up. Just stop the food funerals. Enjoy some things you know are off the table (literally) for the next few months, but remind yourself that one day, you will be able to have some again - just less at one time. And, isn't that the point of this whole thing?

It happens to a lot of people, I think it's because of the anxiety of thinking we aren't going to get to have these foods ever, or at least for a very long time. Sometimes it's referenced as "Food Funeral". Try to do your best, but don't think it means you aren't ready for or deserving of the surgery. It's not a sign of the surgery not being for you at all.

No pre surgery weigh in (Thank God). Insurance has approved everything at this point. And, you're right, it's like saying goodbye to an old friend. Its been my life. I suppose its normal for some people, but I feel that all the hard work I put in the last 6 months is going down the drain. I guess I just need to 'get my head out of my ass' (pardon my french)!

LOVE it! With that kind of attitude, you will be a success! :aureola:

I am SO RIGHT THERE WITH YOU! Me -n- food have had a hell of a messed up relationship over the last 20 or so years, and those mental ties are so hard to cut. Have you ever considered some counseling to deal with the emotions that cause us to eat?

I've been to what is called "cognitive therapy" in a group situation at Kaiser. It's where you take a look at the emotions that are making you "want" a specific kind of food- where you are, who you are with, and what exactly triggered this craving or need to eat. You kind of "map it out", so that the next time that same sitch arises, you can wiggle out of it. :smile1: Does it work? Yes, I think if you commit to it. Obviously, I am overweight and in the process of scheduling a VSG, so it didn't work 100% for me, but it might help you get through the next few weeks! Gd bless you and may you get strength from this community and your loved ones!

((HUGS))

I'm actually in therapy right now. My insurance made me go & I ended up continuing to see her. I realize that without therapy I may not succeed. She is helping me recognize real hunger opposed to head hunger. And when I have a craving to let it pass. Also, what causes my cravings. Learning what a trigger is. And, I dont know what my triggers are yet, but I hope I find out within the next 2 weeks cause my surgery date is almost here.

I ate like a ravenous monster right up until the night before surgery so I totally understand!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
