What Does Small Black Scab On End Of Incision Mean?

Recommended Posts

I'll be 2 months out this Friday and have had no complications. Had 5 incisions and 2 of them had what appeared and felt like a small piece of stitch/thread at the end of them. One of them finally disappeared and is healing as smooth as the other 3. One, however still has that small piece I can mostly feel and a scab has formed at the tip. It looks like a pimple. Today, however, I noticed the scab looks black. More like a big blackhead. Does anybody have any idea if this is normal or should I go see the Dr? That usually means a 3-4 hr wait for a few minutes of his time. Hope someone can relate out there.

It is very common for blackheads to form in a scar. I can't tell you for sure what yours is without looking at it, but I would be willing to wager that that's what it is. Why don't you take a needle and excise it. If it is just a tough lingering scab it also needs to be exfoliated. Either way, your not going to hurt it. If you're worried about it, after you remove it rub a little antibiotic cream on.

It does sound concerning. Is there anyway you could call your surgeon's office and ask them over the phone. My surgeon's office would transfer me to a PA. ;)

I had one of those. It was actually a tiny piece of the internal stitch that worked up to the surface of the scar. I used a tweezer and pulled the piece out, thinking it was a hair. Unless there is infection or redness around it, it should be fine to pull or wash off that spot. Who knows, you may have a freckle there! :)

Thanks for the responses. Today I noticed the tiny stitch tip had popped back out of the scab and so the scab looked less pointy. Still black, but I guess the stitch had been hiding in it. Kinda like an ingrown hair. Gonna try to wash the scab off. Kinda afraid to pull the stitch tip out. Maybe I'll wait until my 3 month follow up and have Dr. do it. Unless it does begin to look infected.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
