I would like to get an idea of how much people exercise post op. I will be four weeks post op next week and hope to begin exercising this weekend. I'll probably be slow at first, but hope to make progress pretty quickly.

It's not that i don't exercise per se, but what qualifies exercise? I don't go and jump around at the gym at all if that what you mean by exercise. . . i do however park my vehicle 1/4 mile away from work and walk back and forth every day! that gives me a 1/2 mile forced walk. . . i also pick up my mail every day, my mailbox is way down a steep graded hill about 1/3 mile so that's another walk (and climb). . . i work in my yard, do housework, and everything else a woman does in the house. . .so does that count?

I walk or run 3-5 times a week. When I walk I do about 2 - 2.5 miles and when I run I do about a mile. I also lift weights 1 or 2 times a week.

walking,treadmill, doing all these weigjhts etc. I don't understand - if you can do all these, (which i can't) how come you aren't able to maintain a better weigt. I hope that doesn't sound awful but....

wish i could do the above.

Hi Kathy -

I'm not sure what you mean exactly but I know that even though I have been exercising I have to also cut out some carbs I've been eating which have most likely been counteracting the exercise in terms of lbs lost. I do feel much, much better and more energetic on the days that I exercise so it makes me want to do it. My weight loss has really slowed down recently but, like I said, part of it has to do with what I'm eating. Hope that helps! Good luck :)

What do you mean by "maintain a better weight"? Most of us have lost a significant amount of weight and still continue to lose. I walk 6-10 miles per week with my dog. That definately gives me the opportunity to burn some calories. My weight loss has slowed down in the last month or so but that's because I've been sleeved 6 months now and I'm closer to goal than ever.

If you can't exercise now, maybe there will be a point when you can start. It also helps with loose skin.

I'm guessing you are asking why I couldn't do this pre-op ... ? Short answer ... because of my relationship with food. I didn't eat to merely satisfy a hunger ...

As far as my exercise, 4 days a week I run between 4 and 5 miles, and twice a week I do Tabata and weight lifting.

I started by walking about 1/2 a mile. There were telephone poles on the side of the road, so I would walk to one pole, then jog to the next, walk to the next ... Then I would walk to one, run two, walk one, run two ... walk one, run three ... until I was able to run a mile. I just kept progressing.

I'm not far enough out to really "hit it hard" but I do make sure I walk for at least an hour every day. That will increase to circuit training and jogging as soon as I'm able.

Well for me, I did run and work out every day - then I got sick and was basically bed-ridden and then put on huge amounts of steroids which actually made me sicker. Other people have had food addictions that, like ANY other addiction has taken priority over exercising and other activities. The thing about food addiction that makes it a MILLION times harder to kick than any other addiction is that you can't quit cold turkey - you can't really 'DETOX' because you need food to survive. That's where the sleeve and a lot of internal work come in.

Can I ask why you aren't able to exercise?

I swim 1 hour 5 days a week. I manage 120 lengths of a 25 yars swimming pool in 1 hour.

Until last week I haven't done any exercise. I started zumba twice a week last week.

I jog 3-4 times a week for 40 - 60 minutes, do yoga twice a week at lunch, and ride a stationary bike 1-2 times a week. I think it's helpful to build and maintain muscle mass, and to keep my metabolism humming along, and it's one more way I reinforce the mental change to a new me and a new lifestyle. Besides, it makes me feel good!

I have to admit that i have been sleeve for 3 weeks now and i haven't gotten the energy to even start walking much less excersise. Is there something wrong with me?

Not to mention that the weather has been crazy ugly outside and i don't have any work out equipment at home.

i do get up at work and walk around every two hours, but i don't think that's what the doctor was talking about when he said i needed to work out. :( I feel so ashamed.

Also, i drive and hour to work and then an hour back so by the time i get home it's about 6 or 7 in the evening and i'm completely exhausted.

I feel so guilty!!! Anyone have any advice?

Mel34, There is nothing wrong with you. I didn't start working out with my trainer again till I was 6 weeks out and we started slow. I was pooped till about 4 months out. I did walk but it was hard at first. My walking group usually walks 2-3 miles and the first couple of times I walked with them I had to turn back 1/2 way.

Just start slow with walking and add on as you feel better. Everyone heals at a different pace.

For my exercise:

Sunday a.m.: 1 hour Body Pump group exercise class

Monday p.m.: 1 hour Cardio Sculpt group exercise class

Tuesday a.m.: Group walk for 45 minutes, ride bike couple of miles

Wedneday: Day off, but may add stationary bike to lose last few pounds to goal

Thursday: Same as Tuesday

Friday: 1/2 hour strength building with personal trainer

Saturday: Same as Wednesday

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
