Help, 4 Days Out And Hungry! Voices Of Experience Needed Please!

Recommended Posts

Surgery on Feb. 1. Husband and I both on the same day. He is feeling no hunger, I am. Today's meals;

2T cream of wheat and 2T Greek yogurt, Unjury chicken Soup 3T and 1T unsweetened applesauce, dinner was 2T oatmeal with Protein Powder and 1T applesauce, 3T yogurt for snack, 4 sugar free popsicles. 1 Gatorade G2. 45 ounces of Water minimum. What am I doing wrong. This is what our NUT suggests but I am having a hell of a mental game here. Suggestions???

I'm yet to be sleeved (8 days!) but I think from reading so much on this forum, the first thing the experienced folks will ask you is...are you taking a PPI? The stomach acid is reported to mimic hunger after the surgery...

I am really confused by your diet just 4 days post-op. My doctor (and most that I've read about) have sleeve patients on all liquid diets for the first 1-3 weeks after surgery before ever adding anything like yogurt, applesauce, much less high-carb items like cream of wheat and oatmeal. Is this just a difference of doctors?

The diet my doc does is like this. It starts on day 3. They do a stage progression each week from there until a month out. Then you stay there for a month. After that you start the maintenance diet.

From the diet you're describing it sounds to me like its probably head hunger. I would switch 32 of those 48oz of Water to Protein Shakes and see how you feel. From what you're describing it doesn't sound like you're getting enough Protein.< /p>

I would also suspect head hunger. Were you told where your stomach is located? If it is in your abdomen that you feel the "hunger", it is quite likely head hunger.

Sometimes I get that feeling too, but it is lower in my abdomen than where what remains of my stomach is located. Knowing that my stomach isn't down there has been tremendously helpful in avoiding eating when I shouldn't.

Yep head hunger. Eat sf popsicles. It will help with your Fluid intake, but yet you'll feel like you're eating something. BTW, i can't believe you can even eat anything other than clears! I know all doctors have different diets, but my tummy wouldn't even allow me to hardly try Jello. If i would've tried greek yogurt, i know it wouldn't have stayed down. Don't force yourself to eat if you can't. Concentrate on your fluids right now.

Yup totally agree here, i wasn't allowed anything but clear fluids for 2 weeks post surgery then i could add the yogurt and soft mushies. . . i actually had to go to a class before starting mushies with a nutritionist in order to start. . . . wasn't allowed at all til we did that nutrition class. . . same with transitioning to solids, class first, then solids. . . (I loved my doctor) I'm out going onto year 3 now and am really surprised how quickly newbies get to eat. . . good luck all! Yes, head hunger is a real b----ch . . . .

Before I could leave the hospital, I had to be able to eat Jello, pudding and this custardy stuff and they gave me some glucerna to drink. So I was only on Clear Liquids for one day and then they had me one full liquids for a week, then on to mushies. Now incorporating soft food, fish, cucumbers...

Carbs in the applesauce and oatmeal/cream of wheat. I'm VERY surprised they have you eating that stuff four days out of surgery.

My dr had no problem with cream of wheat or applesauce. He says if I eat the calories and Protein im supposed to he isn't worried about my carbs. Apparently it's working as tomorrow is 3 weeks and I'm down 35 lbs

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
