So, I had surgery on Tuesday afternoon, which puts me at four days post-op.

On post-up day two I was supposed to work my way up to 8oz per hour of clear fluids. I never made it, stalled out at 4oz. I can push to 5oz but it makes me really nauseas.

On day three I was supposed to start full liquids, including Protein supplements. I drank exactly 4oz of the Protein supplement and spent the next four hours sincerely regretting it. I didn't vomit, but I'm still not quite sure how I managed it.

So, today I've been sipping on 16oz of a mix of Water and G2 (low cal) gatorade. Since 8:30am I've gotten in about 10oz. I feel very full, but I'm forcing myself to take two small sips every five minutes. I kinda feel like I shouldn't even attempt a full liquid until I can get down at least 32oz of clear liquid in a day since I feel like at this point staying hydrated is a bit more important than protein. Am I wrong?

Is this delay something that I should be worried about? Should I be doing something different?

Also, any advice on how to take medication. I know I should crush it up, but it leaves a bitter flavor in anything I put it in. Is it better to put it in a small amount of liquid and just swallow it, or better to put it in pudding or something and force it down?

I appreciate the help!

Nope you are doing fine. I couldn't and still can't drink plain Water. I have to drink g2 and arizona diet green tea and it can't be too cold. I also could never deal with straws. Some people can some people can't. You just got to find what works for you. Switch it up with different drinks, different temps and see.

For medicine I had the same issue. Every time I crushed it was a horrible nasty taste so I crushed and mixed on a teaspoon of pudding. So much easier.

Now I am fine, so you will get better. Just hang in there and keep pushing the fluids in slowly.

I have trouble with plain Water too. I can do Powerade Zero and Decaf iced tea but water is harder.

In my opinion you are doing well but if you feel insure then maybe you should call your dr or hospital with questions. Is that possible? I came home with liquid medications and prilosec and I opened the capsule and poured the contents on my tongue. What meds are you taking?

I had some of the same issues. When I first came home from the hospital, I think I barely drank anything for the first 3 days. I had no appetite and all the rumbling going on with my stomach after I did drink something made me not want anything. That 4th day I was scared I was going to become dehydrated so at that time i started to force myself to drink.

I am also on medication and use to crush my blood pressure medicine up. That became so gross I couldn't do it anymore so I just break it in half now. I take one half in the morning and the other half in the evening.

You definitely need to try to get your fluids in - as close to 64 oz as you can, even sipping when you wake during the night. Have you tried many warm liquids? Warm tea, broth, sf apple cider packets all went down much better for me than cold liquids, even now they do. I could do unflavored Protein mixed in with sf hot chocolate much easier than a full blown shake. Try you best to get in protein as well - your body needs it to heal!!! Also, if your pills are small, you shouldn't have to crush them. I was taking mine whole (PPI and a Migraine med) right out of the hospital. I was also told I could take Tylenol whole.

Just keep trying to get your fluids in. I know its hard. As far as the meds, get a pill cutter and just cut it into little pieces and swallow. Works great :)

I'm 7 weeks out and I fianally can drink Fluid without any problems. I slowly worked my way up to where I am today.. Your body will tell you how much is to much and slow worked for me. Now, I drink an ice tea ( no sugar) from McD's in the morning (32 oz) and 1 - 20 oz Isopure ( with 40 grams of protein) during the work day and at least 3 bottle waters until about 8PM - I still sip the Ispoure because to much of that makes me sick due to the taste but I take it Slow

Slow and easy wins this race! :) You are doing great if you can manage most of the liquids in a day this early! Keep sipping and sipping, then walk, walk, walk. You will be amazed at how quickly your body can handle more sipping and more walking! :)

It is more important to get liquids in than Protein, especially very early post-op. You must stay hydrated because dehydration will cause WAY more problems than lack of Protein right now.

Good luck!! :)

Ok, so today has been more successful. I got down 12oz of Water, 8oz of G2 Gatorade, ans 4oz of Gatorade recover (fortified with hydrolyzed protein), which comes to a total of 24oz. While I know that's still not enough, its triple what I got down yesterday so at least its progress.

I have tried fluids of different temperatures and room temp seems to work best.

I also managed to take my meds. I have several but only going with essentials right now - thyroid meds and allergy meds. I crushed them, stirred into a half ounce of Gatorade and just swallowed... NASTY! UGH! Multivitamin also got pr-crushed just to be safe and went down much easier.

I also managed to walk a mile, but was dog tired at the end.

Hopefully I'll make as much progress tomorrow!

Please ask ur doc @ crushing meds. Some may be, some not. Some capsuls can be opened, some do not allow that. You can't decide on your own. Please ask.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
