Can't Eat Or Drink From Nausea

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Nov. 16th 2011, and it seems I havead nothing but problems. Actually everything was fine untill Dec.1st. On the 1st I began having severe nausea. I went to my surgeon and they admitted me to the hospital. Shortly after this I began having severe pain in my abdomen. This went on for 5 days ( I don't remember this from the meds I was on) on the 5th day the surgeon decided to go in and look around to see if he could determine the cause. He found that I had a blood clot on the middle of my small intestines and it had kill that part of them and they had become gangrene. This put my body into shock and caused me to develop ARDS (Acute Repsperatory Distress Syndrom). This was all made worse by the fact that when putting in a centeral line they punctured my lungs. I was put on a vent and at one point the doctors called my family and told them they need to come and say their goodbyes. I have heard that from where I was at the survival rate is only 3-30% (depending on where you look). At one point my heart began to stop and I was given chest compressions. After that, they said I made a 180 and my condition began to improve. I got out of ICU in early January and was released from the hospital Jan. 19th.

This brings us to now. I am still working on recovering my strength from all the time in the hospital, but my problem now is I am almost completely unable to eat or drink. I have 4 different anti nausea meds yet I still get nausea when I drink or eat. I seems to get better in the evening, but is really bad during the day. I have an appointment with a GI doctor on Monday, and with my surgeon on the 10th. Right now almost all my nutrition is what I have been injecting through my J-tube (I was given this in the hospital to feed me through when I couldn't eat, it goes straight to the top of my large intestines). I am looking for any idea that can help with the nausea and help me get enough liquids and food down so I can get the J-tube taken out. The only plus so far has been that I have lost around 90lbs so far.

So, what caused the blood clot? Did they remove the bad section of intestine?

They did remove the bad section of intestines about 125 cm. I am working with a hemitologist trying to figure out what caused the blood clot.

Thinking of you and sending prayers your way!

The J-tube is a blessing for now, that you can get those fluids in some way is great, but trust me I do understand wanting it out! I am finally hoping to get mine out Tuesday! But they are uncomfortable and make you feel confined to your home. Do you have a machine to push fluids or do you just bolus them? I had a machine and could only bolus Water and meds. Do they have you taking some amount regularly through you tube or are they mosly wanting you to eat/drink?

I don't have a machine for it, I just use a syringe. The problem with the J-tube for me is I can only put 1-2 oz at a time or it makes me sick. Today I have been pushing a lot of Water and Protein through the J-tube in case it is dehydration causing my nausea.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
