In Mexico For Surgery With Dr. Garcia

Recommended Posts

I arrived in Tijuana this afternoon. i was met at the airport by Samuel (Dr Garcia's driver) and taken to the Ticuan Hotel. I will be going to the hospital for the surgery tomorrow at 7AM. Thus far, I have been pleasantly surprised by the hotel and the Professionalism of the driver. I live in Puerto Rico and I speak fluent Spanish but I havent had to speak Spanish at all since I've been here. Actually, from what I have seen so far, people speak better English in Tijuana than in Puerto Rico.

I'll post here after the surgery when I am feeling up to it to let you all know how it went. This forum has been very useful to me and I am eager to contribute by giving an informed report of my experience. I am a 4th year medical student so I think I will be able to give a very informed opinion of the standard of care here. For what it is worth all of my research thus far indicates to me that, at least in Dr. Garcia's practice, the standard of care meets or exceeds standars of care in a US hospital. After the surgery I will let you know if my opinion remains the same. Thanks to everyone on here who has posted their opinions and experiences as they were very helpful to me :-)

Glad to hear things went well. I was sleeved on Monday with Dr. Garcia. I love his demeanor, He is very soft spoken. I like Samual. Ask him what he does besides being a driver. You will be surprised. He gets around in that Volvo.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
