Newly Banded Need Advice

Recommended Posts

I was banded on July 25, 2006, the surgery went well and it took a few days of driving to get home, but all that went well. I have been home on my 2 weeks of liquids and well I dont think I am getting enough Calories or Protein in and I am feeling very light headed and sleepy and all that good stuff. I am also taking 3 shots of halerpin a day to thin the blood for 2 weeks after surgery which has caused my Time of the month to come early and so now I am trying to find a way to get extra Iron in as well but I dont know of a good source of Iron that is liquid or in a food that can be eaten on the liquid phase. I have tried the Isopure zero carb ready to drink drinks but there too sweet for me, so I ordered the unflavored unjury Protein Powder but it wont be here for a few days so I was wondering if you all had any suggestions of ways I can get more calories and liquids and Protein in and some iron. I hate feeling so fatigued and run down. Any help would be appreciated very much.

Thanks!

I spent a week on Carnation Instant Breakfast (purchased at Walmart). It is a great source of Protein. I on the other hand am glad now to be taking Isopure and love the sweet taste :bananapartyhat: Why not give the Carnation Instant Breakfast a try?

I had a bit of trouble with fainting during this phase. My regime only demanded one day of Clear Liquids and then onto regular liquids and anything that could go through a straw was fair game, so at about day 4 or 5 when I could handle slightly thicker stuff, I ditched the Optifast, the juice and the like and started on "real" food in liquid form - Soups that had meat and carbs in them, even spaghetti bolognaise blended down with a can of tomatoes and some chicken stock. It made all the difference to me.

I am drinking advant edge (Walmart or Krouger) it is great it has no sugar and has 15 grams of Protein. If you are drink other drinks you need to look at the protein, sugar and cal... This seems to work better than any thing I have tried and it taste great.

My surgeon said not to worry about calories and Protein in the fasting stage following surgery. He says our body is using all our fat stores and not to worry.

I am with Jack. I am enjoying my nice homemade chicken stock.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
