Road Trip For 2 Weeks! What To Eat?!

Recommended Posts

Well, here's an update. I am a little over a week into my 2 week hiatus. Eating while on the road has been at times a bit of a challenge. I never realized how easy it used to be to just pick up some crackers, toast, bagel etc and go! Now I am doing all I can to get my Protein in while on the road. I am doing ok with my fluids but I do feel that I am not eating as well as I should be. Because I am on vacation I have had a nibble of a brownie and a nibble of dark chocolate. Not the whole thing mind you but just a nibble and that makes me feel guilty. I know I am still losing weight I just don't know how much because I am nowhere near a scale at the moment but I feel it.

I am on regular foods now that I am over 6 weeks out and I have found that nothing tastes the way I think it will. You know foods I thought I would want once I could eat again. The basics of the diet still taste the best. According to my nut I can slowly incorporate different foods now as long as they agree with me. But I am afraid! I feel like every choice I make is a bad one. Too many carbs, not enough Protein etc. I am doing my best but I am really ready to go home so that I can feel like I am more in control of my meals and menu.

Anyway, that's the long and short of it. I am definitely feeling the restriction and I am not gorging so that is a definite plus. I guess I just need some support from my fellow sleevers! :)

Aww, I am proud of you girl. You are doing well under the circumstances. My surgery is Tuesday and my family and in-laws will be taking a vacation when I am 4weeks out. I hope I can do as well. And don't feel too guilty over the nibble, that is the whole point of the sleeve. So you can still eat like a normal person, but in very small controlled portions :0)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
