Post Op Reintroduction Of Foods?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 1/20 and was 100% liquid for the first week before I moved to purees. I've been on purees (Per Drs order) since Saturday but I'm finding that I'm having trouble consuming anything other than sugar free popsicles, yogurt, and milk. I know I'm supposed to be doing the Protein shakes, I can't stomach them. A friend went to tropical smoothie cafe and got me my favorite, a pb&j Protein smoothie - it made me nauseus after 4 sips. So for the last 11 days I've been surviving on sf popsicles and the little nibbles of food I manage to force into myself.

I can't decide if it's the texture of the foods or the taste of the foods that just isn't sitting well with me. Sometimes it's the texture, sometimes when I eat things don't sit right in my sleeve. Sometimes it's the taste. The funny thing is, I've been rotating the same 4 foods since Saturday: eggs, refried Beans, canned chicken, and fat free cream of chicken Soup. None of them appeal to me, sometimes they don't sit right, yesterday they gave me heartburn, today they gave me gas... I'm at a loss! Even pureed fuit just isn't working for me right now. I'm supposed to go to mushies next week too but I'm in no position to be comsuming real food at this point. I feel like I want to just stop eating for another two weeks and then try again.

Anybody have any simiilar issues? Have any recipes that went down easy? I'd love to be able to eat, especially since I go back to work Monday, I just really can't stomach anything consistantly.

Hi! I had some issues with Protein shakes post surgery, something about the sweetener that is used in them. I read a recipe on here that used the Target whey Protein powder in vanilla which got me switching my thinking from pre-made drinks to making my own. I mixed the Protein Powder with unsweetened almond milk, a splash of vanilla extract and a couple ice cubes and gave it a whirl in the blender and I loved it. Super easy way to get in 26 g of Protein.

Whatever you do, listen to your body and call your dr if you continue to not be able to eat. In time you'll figure out what works for you and your sleeve. Do your best to get in your protein via yogurt, and what you can tolerate. Are you drinking enough fluids?

Hope this helps a bit.

I don't think so and I think its starting to catch up to me. I ate a tiny bite of a bean burrito I made for my son tonight and instantly had to vomit. From what my Dr said increased nausea is a sign of dehydration.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
