Gastric Sleeve Surgery Tuesday Morning For This Newbie

Recommended Posts

Well it's now here. My surgery that is. Been ongoing since Oct. with my first visit to Dr. Cahill. My story started with my boss having a sleeve because he was pre-diabetic. I had never heard of this procedure even though my mom had recently had a Gastric Bypass. He lost a lot of weight and started to tell me of the benefits.

You see I've been a type 2 diabetic for roughly 15 years and it is really starting to take it's toll. I've been heavy most of my life with a fifty pound gain 20 years ago when I quit smoking. At my heaviest i was around 290 but have maintained 265 to 270 for quite a few years. The struggle has been that with type 2 it is extremely hard to lose weight. My main issue right now is the neuropathy in my feet. It feels like I have acid in my shoes. I can't hardly stand to have shoes or socks on anymore. When he told of the sleeve I started to do some research and found that it is almost as effective as the bypass for resolution of my diabetes without some of the issues. Dr. Cahill had almost talked me into the bypass until he found out I have history with Ulcerative Colitis and said there was too much chance of a serious flare with the bypass.

So the sleeve it is. Just praying that the amount of time I've been diabetic doesn't prevent my chances of resolution. I figure at the very least it should improve it. So that's my story or at least the concise version. I do know this week of pre-op diet has been the hardest thing I've ever done. I'll be glad when this week is over.

Yes, the preop diet is torture, but the results are worth it. There are so many benefits to VSG, you will be so happy. Today, keep you eye one the goal and do not cheat the diet as you are almost there!

Good luck on Tuesday, please provide an update when you are able.

Hugs.

You are going to do great! The hardest part for me was the 3 month supervised diet (which was the same as my pre-op diet, no carbs and just protien) and waiting for the surgery itself. Congrats on getting this far and I hope that you are completely diabetes free at the end of this process.

Good luck!

Congratulations! I am also type 2 diabetic and want to nip this thing in the bud. I am having surgery Friday. Let's keep in touch and see how our diabetes changes after surgery. Hoping it goes into remission for both of us! Hope your surgery goes smoothly!
