Weight Gain At Hospital For Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was only there for 24 hours but was given about six bags of Fluid and had very little output. I gained almost ten pounds in that day did this happen to anybody else and how long until it goes away. I feel very swollen still.

Congratulations on being sleeved and on your way to a healthier life. I am only a month out, but it is very common to gain weight from all the fluids. I too gained a lot, but it came off, it's just Water weight. :-) I think the scale is bad for our psyche, we should hide it at the neighbors and be weighed once every month. I am doing once a week and I think that too is to often, I haven't moved in 2 weeks. My clothes have gotten looser, but no weight loss. It's all part of the journey. Don't get discouraged, just sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk. You'll be feeling great soon.

Thank you. I'm freaking out a bit as I worked so hard to lose twenty prior to surgery and gained ten literally overnight. It's still slowly coming back off. I wasn't going to weigh myself, but well I did, lol. Maybe I'll wait a few days before I do it again.

IV Fluid is saline. Salt Water. We absorb it like sponges, which is what we are supposed to do. It will come off in no time. Keep to your surgeon's directions. Good luck, and welcome!

Yes this happens to a lot of patients. You're just going to have to let time heal you. Keep focusing on healing and getting all your fluids in, the scale will start working with you in time. Xoxo

Don't worry about it, I went up 13 lbs in the two days I was at the hospital. I felt too crappy to care, by the time I was feeling well enough it was already gone. I get those moments where I think awwww, I could be at a lower weight if it weren't because of those 13 lbs, but I snap out of them fast (sometimes with some help :tongue2: ).

uggg..water weight... I lost 30 pounds in ten days after the birth of my daughter. I was like the dough boy retaining Water with the pregnancy (I had pre-eclampsia). But sweat and pee - all good! Even more important for you to get your fluids in so you can flush the IV stuff out. Best wishes and keep the faith!

Don't fret (too much :o) For each of my 3 c-sections this happened to me and it all melted away around the 10 day-2 week mark. I felt like that was sooooo long but it was consistent each time and I knew it wasn't "real weight" - plus its kind of fun to see the scale drop such a big amount practically all at once! Congrats on graduating to the loser's bench!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
