Did You Need An Upper Gi Or And Upper Endoscopy?

Recommended Posts

The reason I ask is because I told my surgeon's secretary and general doctor that my PCP's office recommended an upper endoscopy and they both said good that way you won't need the upper GI done. Well today I went for my pre op appointment and the physicians assistant wants and upper GI done on me. I am SOO annoyed because the endoscopy was done with hardly any (10mgs of valium whoopie) sedation, I was retching and vomiting (the small amt of liquid I had in me) the entire time and today 1 day after I am in severe pain and continuing to vomit. I really don't want to have another procedure done if it is unnecessary.

Well and upper GI is nothing like getting scoped. But I think you are more annoyed that you have to do both after they told you one or the other.

I just had an upper GI before surgery so they could see if I had gallstones (which I did) and pictures of stomach and liver, etc. Think that is the most important.

So, for you - ask your doctor why both when then said just one. Did they find something that requires further tests or should they only have done one. Ask questions. Don't accuse just ask why needed. Good lucka and remember no matter what is to be done and the end of this you will be sleeved.

Hugs.

OOhhhh...that's not cool. What a hack! The endoscopy should have been totally painless. In fact whatever happy drugs they gave me left me feeling quite good!

An upper GI is not the most fun thing you can do, but really isn't that bad. My surgeon wanted those, but I'd had them done recently enough that he just sent for the reports.

I had both, and I'm glad I did. As iegal pointed out, they are two very different tests. I did the endoscopy in the dr.'s office with no drugs/sedation other than a local spray in my nose which deadened my nose and throat a bit as it dripped down, and it was definitely uncomfortable and hurt most of the day. But it wasn't unbearable for me. If they don't do an endoscopy before surgery, they will likely do one during surgery. It's how they can see the inside of your stomach, and that's pretty important. They did one at surgery as well as prior to with me. I also had an abdominal ultrasound to see the size of my life, spleen, gallbladder, etc. So lots of tests.

It's no fun to have both, because that equals more cost, but I think it makes a difference overall and helps your surgery be safer.

I too had gallstones, and they took out my gallbladder when I had the surgery. They also found a small hiatal hernia which did not show up on ultrasound and repaired it. So I had three times the fun in recovery!

Good luck!

I had to have an upper GI. The stuff you have to drink is gross but otherwise it was no problem . . . I was in & out pretty quickly.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
