No Pre Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

It seems like everyone I talk to has to follow some pre op diet. I just had my pre op appointment today and I asked if there is any liquid diet, or Nasty crap I have to drink and they said no. Has anyone else had not to follow a pre op diet? I obviously am not going to go out and eat McDonalds, but it just seems weird.

I have saw a few posts that said the same thing. I have visited a few boards and the general consensus says to do atleast a 7 day liquid diet and clears 24 hours leading up to surgery. Why? It shrinks the fatty tissue in the liver plus no solids in your stomach make it easier for the stomach to heal, less gas after from residual decomposition, and it allows your stomach to focus on healing rather than multitasking.

Thats pretty much the just of it all.

Good luck :)

I did not have a preop diet. I only fasted from midnight the night before surgery. It all depends on who the surgeon is.

I would ABSOLUTELY recommend a pre-op diet of some kind I had to do two weeks of straight liquids and it really prepared me for how life would be after surgery. Good Luck look forward to hearing about your journey. =D

I wasnt put on a liquid pre-op diet prior to surgery but my surgeon required me to eat a South Beach phase 1 type diet where you eat only protien and vegs, no fruit or carbs. That lasted about 1 month. Then the day before surgery I was put on a clear liquid diet until the evening when you cant drink or eat anything. I did drink Protein Drinks prior to surgery to find one I liked to use after surgery.

Nope, not everyone will be required to have a pre-op diet. That doesn't mean you don't have to do one on your own. Just my opinion but perhaps the few weeks prior to surgery, use that time to learn the sleever rules, prepare and get used to what life might be like post surgery. It's tough enough without the crash course after. Get smaller plates, utensils and start measuring your foods. Buy things you might need, find Protein supplements that you can stomach, etc.

Also, get started with the Protein first rules. Get to drinking 64 oz of Water a day (thats my minimum) and find some type of physical activity that you will stick to post op. You will likely lose a few pounds on your own doing this, and as I always say... any weight you lose pre-op is only a few steps closer to goal. It also doesn't hurt to try to be as healthy as you can be while in the OR. :)

Wishing you the very very best in the upcoming weeks!!!

Neither my husband nor I had any pre-op diet other than liquids from 10:00 am on the day prior to surgery. I am kind of glad. I am one day away from being off full liquids and I am sick of Soup and Jello, etc. If I had started before surgery it would have been harder for me.

Every surgeon is different. If he/she had wanted you to change your diet prior to surgery he/she would have told you.

Good luck.

I was not required to do a pre-op diet and I'm really glad about that. you are going to have the rest of your life to learn how to eat properly, no reason to start early if your doc says it isn't necessary. It is way easier to stop eating after surgery because your stomach is tiny and you don't get hungry, why starve and suffer unnecessarily beforehand? (Just my opinion :)

BTW, my surgery was a breeze, no complications or ill effects due to the lack of a pre-op diet.

I love my sleeve and would do it all again in a heartbeat! Good luck to you on your amazing new adventure!

My surgery is tomorrow morning! I've been on a two-day pre-op diet of liquids only. I do agree that it got my mindset ready for the future. Isopure aren't that bad. This is my first post, so thanks for all the info everyone is so willing to share.

I was not required to do a pre op diet other than Clear Liquids 24 hours prior to surgery and nothing after midnight. The reason my surgeon doesn't require it is because she requires 10% weight loss leading up to surgery. This is to ensure patients prove they are committed AND to shrink the liver.

I think the pre-op diet depends on several things, but like you posted, I also had to lose weight leading up to the surgery, although not 10%. Insurance required that I lose 5% of my body weight before approval, and I didn't have as high of a BMI as many, so my pre-op diet was simply two weeks of a low-fat, vegetarian diet, and no food or drink after midnight before surgery.

This foiled my plan for a birthday steak dinner, but it was worth it!

My surgeon didn't require me to do a pre-op diet, but I did one on my own. I had a liquid diet for 2 meals and then one meal was Protein and veggie. I only did it for a week, because I got my approval 1 week before surgery date. I still lost 6 lbs and my surgeon was really happy. :)

My pre-op appointment is this Thursday. Not only did I have to lose 10% of excess body weight before my surgeon would even set a surgery date but I will also have to do a 14 day pre-op diet that consist of 2 Protein Shakes and one low calorie meal less than 350 cal. According to my surgeon people who lose weight before surgery have a better chance of losing and keeping the weight off after surgery. O'yea I can have a snack in between like fruit....Good luck

I didn't have to follow a pre op diet either. My doctor said it's because I was on the lighter side with BMI. . . gosh go figure that one out. . . but i didn't so i was happy. I did have to follow a severely strict diet regimen the day before surgery to make sure my colon was clean. . . but that is all. . . no problem here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
