Protein Drink With Too Much Sugar!

Recommended Posts

My surgeon isn't a Protein Drink fan so I haven't really used them since surgery. I picked up an Odowalla single-serving Protein Monster with 25g of protein thinking that would be ok. It's LOADED with sugar and is not making me happy! Ick.

a lot of Protein Drinks are full of sugar! You need to get the low carb or carb control kind. EAS, Muscle Milk Light, Atkins are all prepackaged that have some sugar but not too bad. The Special K and Slim Fast kind have tons of sugar. They taste ok but not worth the sugar content. If you dont want a shake try the Isopure plus Zero. It is like a koolaid type flavor. I enjoy it and it has 15 grams of Protein for 8oz. you can get them at GNC and RiteAids with GNC.

Hello there,

I have tried a few drinks, but the only two I will buy from here on are Chike and nectar. The Chike satisfies the milkshake/ice cream flavor and the Nectars have many great juice flavors that I often mix with Crystal Lite to make a delicious fruity drink. I believe the company name for nectar is Syntrax. I hope you find a solution you can live with soon.

Yes, always check the nutrition facts before drinking any type of Protein supplement. In fact, it is a part of my routine on anything I'm eating or drinking.

This is so true. I bought a four pack of what I think was an Odwalla product at Sam's Club. What was I thinking?

After I got out of the bathroom (!), I went to read the label again, since it was the only new item I had tried in a while. Sure enough it was loaded with sugar. I know I looked at the label at the store, but I guess I read it wrong or just failed to read the sugar content at all.

Lesson learned!

Yes, I always check labels now. When I have forgotten, I have always regretted it. I like Nutek pro 5, it's high on Protein and low on sugar and it tastes great. I also drink the Premier chocolate protein from costco or Sam's Club. ;)

I'm a freakish label reader! I don't know what I was thinking with this? Maybe I had a coupon and just didn't pay attention? I ate a little cottage cheese and sort-of evened out but ewww... nice early lesson about the evils of sugar! =)

Because of the Odwalla incident, I am so cautious about sugar now. It was a relatively easy lesson as I was at home when it happened. What if I had been out?

Like others have mentioned, I am a huge fan of the Premier Protein pre-packaged shakes. They have only one gram of sugars, and it is easy to take them anywhere.

I know this is TMI but I'm now dealing with the morning after of all that sugar and seriously, worst I've felt since surgery! Sugar is EVIL!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
