What Is Your New Addiction?

Recommended Posts

I was discussing my surgery with a WLS nurse the other day and she was telling me that it is quite common for people to develop new addictions to replace their food addictions. Some people turn to unhealthy addictions: drugs, sex, etc.. I want to get some ideas of new areas to focus my attention (other than fitness). I don't think I will ever be addicted to exercize (although I suffer through what I need to). So what have all of you turned to????

I wish it were sex :biggrin5: but it seems to be shoes.

I would have to say doing artwork is my new addiction. Before, I'd get home and sit in front of the TV all day but now I feel more productive. I still need to get in the habit of walking when I get home but I'm always too tired.

I wouldnt mind my new addicition being sex,but the poor hubby works 50+ hours a week, i might just kill him :-( Why would that be bad if you were in a safe and healthy relationship? :boxing_smiley:

I'm squarely in the money-burning camp, and have been for as long as I can remember. Ugh.

I've also become totally obsessed with food, which is new. I'm hoping that will subside once I get into a new normal eating routine. (I'm just one month post-op.)

I've been toying with the idea of getting a Wii and getting rid of my home internet connection. I waste so much time websurfing! (Guess that's another addiction to add to the list, right??)

I have been giving gardening alot of thought lately, but I don't want to plant flowers, I want to plant vegetables. I am hesitant though, because people around me keep telling me I am obsessed with food, and now I am thinking planting vegetables is gonna make them right. I think I have been told this so many times I am starting to believe it >.<

I haven't found one yet and I think that is what is making me depressed. Before food was my comfort, took that out and now I am a little lost!!

Well atleast you are eating healthy foods. I think a veggie garden is a great idea! We grow a small one every year. Tomatos cucumbers (try watermelon every year but no luck) i think this year i might branch out and put some green peppers, squash try a few other things if nothing else it will help keep the grocery bill down.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Although, healthy cooking is rewarding in and of itself; I'd like to find a hobby beside cooking.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
