The last two days both my knees have been aching. I had a one day episode of this about a week ago. Previously I had sore knees from the weight but that got much better after I lost only 20 pounds. I've had a bulging disc in my back since 1993 which has caused me a ton of pain over the years and prevented me from doing things....contributed to some of my weight gain. Now my back is great! No pain at all! No more pain meds, yay! I'm suspecting that my knees ache because I stand on them differently since my belly and my bum are so much smaller. Like my center of gravity has changed so the pressure points in my knees are in a different place. What do you guys think? Feasible?

Or am I nuts?......maybe I don't want you to answer that one? LOL!

Nice to have no back pain. You might need to strenghten the muscles around your knees so there's no pain. I was just talking to my personal trainer about knees. Actually he was telling me about his dad's knees and about the muscles around the knee that can help compensate for his father's bad knee. ;)

My knees began hurting post-surgery, and still do on occasion. I never had knee pain before.

Some research on the net told me there might be a few causes:

1. Dehydration. The synovial Fluid in our joints can decrease or become more viscous when we are dehydratred, even if only mildly.

2. Lack of exercise (the category I currently fall into, unfortunately) will contribute to muscle loss. Up until now, you've had amazing muscles in your legs supporting you. As you lose muscle, though, your legs have to work harder at supporting and balancing.

If you don't feel like either of these causes apply to you, check with an orthopedic doctor! Never hurts to be on the safe side.

My nurse friend actually warned me about this pre-op. I have bad knees anyway, but they didn't hurt as long as I didn't walk. Since I've been dumping weight like it's a bad habit, my knees ache, my balance is off, and I sometimes run into walls. It is getting better, but it's all because they are adjusting to their new, lighter, loads. I still feel kind of dumb when I hit a wall, though. LOL

This is interesting! I've never had knee pain and now suddenly after loosing 40 lbs they're starting to hurt. I have to say it's an unexpected development, but as always it's nice to know I'm not alone.

Thanks everybody! Anytime I told my primary care Dr I had knee pain, he always blamed it on the weight (along with just about any other complaint I've had). Finally I went to an Orthopedic Dr- turns out I had a broken piece of cartilige that would get stuck in between the knee joint, and I had other cartilidge that was shredded (Orth told me it could have started as a result of an injury from high sschool crosscounty practice. Anyway, after surgery, knee was fine. Now that I lost wt that knee started bothering me again, AND the other knee too! I thought, either I'm crazy or this is just a sick joke- knee pain After losing wt!

There are some professionals that theoretically think that our muscles have memories. I believe this is true. THe hard work is letting go of the pain because it's no longer needed. I am a therapist and I work with my clients in letting go of the pain. ;)

Yay! I'm so glad people can relate and corroborate my experience. I spoke to the PA at my surgeon's office about it, and she told me it wasn't surgery related.

As far as I saw it, it wasn't normal for a 27 year old girl to develop knee pain after surgery, and after losing weight!

This is something I'd like to discuss with her more in person.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
