Who Does This Alone?

Recommended Posts

I'm doing this alone too. My only concern is getting home from the airport after the surgery. I wonder if that will be difficult to do alone?

It really depends. I drove home from the airport without a problem. I would take into account your pain when you're leaving and have a contingency of a cab

Thanks circa. But aren't you still on a bunch of pain meds at that time?

I wasn't. I haven't had anything for pain AT ALL since the day after surgery.

Wow! That's incredible. I was told to expect the same recovery as when I had my gall bladder removed in December. And I was on pain meds for about a week.. I couldn't stand the morphine after the first night though because it was just too strong, so I took hydrocodone, and then advil.

Shannon, I went to Dr. Almanza Jan.9th 2012. I went alone. I live in NC and flew out the day before and spent the night in San Diego. Met the driver back at the airport. I met some nice people that had brought someone and some were alone. Now that I went alone. I wished I had taken someone. It was harder than I expected. The flight home was uncomfortable. I wish you the best of luck...

I am planning on going alone in April. I am arriving in San Diego on Sunday 22nd and having surgery on the 23rd. I am not bothered by it at all. I have traveled all over the world ( currently reside in China). I am sure as my surgery date gets closer, I will discover one or more people being there around the same time. I look at it as my big adventure to the new and improved me!! :)

I just went to China too, by myself, as part of volunteer vacationing. It was amazing! I felt totally fine being alone there, I just booked a bunch of group tours and I met so many wonderful people from all over the world!

But this is a little different you have to admit. Yes, I am looking forward to the adventure of it all. I guess when I think about it, the only thing that I am truly worried about is if something goes wrong, and if I can finally lose this weight and keep it off! I was so thankful that my gall bladder erupted and I needed emergency surgery to remove it the very next day after returning from China. Can you imagine if it happened over there? What would I do??? Maybe I'd still be there! LOL!

I'm sure it will be fine. I am really looking forward to it and making new friends on this journey! :)

So, I just made my FINAL payment, and booked my airfare, and hotel for San Diego for the day before. It's done, I'm doing it.....I can't believe it!

Congrats Shannon! I am sooo happy for you! I will only be a month ahead. I had my surgery last friday with Almanza and all went well. There were a few hiccups with the travel from the airport to the hospital and some loud noises and overcrowdedness at the recovery house, but, the surgery itself was fine and the doctor did a good job. I wish you all of the best!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
