Three Weeks Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Here I am three weeks post-op and down 22lbs "officially" since the morning of surgery. People keep asking how I feel. Well honestly, I still have alot of pain in my left side... it hurts to sneeze, cough, lay on my back, side and just about any other position...It feels like my insides are ripping apart. The dr says this is normal. My doctor was Nick Nicholson in Plano, Tx. He is a dream and his office and coordinators rock.

I had to go back to work yesterday. I have a desk job and it goes without saying that sitting all day was a serious pain. The last two hours I just stood up because it felt better.

I have not been able to work out much since surgery because of the pain in my side. I am hoping by next week I will be feeling better. My office offers a free gym membership so I am ready to get on that treadmill during my lunch.

Its kinda weird because everyone I tell wants to know what I eat, how much I eat, what it feels like, and a ton of other questions. I know they are just curious so I try to be compliant and answer them the best I can.

If you have any questions for me feel free to ask! I can't wait till I am a couple months post-op and feel better!

I'm sorry you're hurting. I'm pain free unless my toddler manages to get an accidental jab or kick into one of my incision sites. Hope you feel better soon! I've been using my treadmill at home too and it's been great. Good luck!

I have been mostly pain free since about day 4. I had that nagging left shoulder pain off and on also, but it finally disappeared 2 days ago.

So sorry you are still in so much pain. I'm not sure how normal that is, but it hasn't been my experience. Hopefully others will be able to relate. I just wanted to wish you well and congrats on the 22 lbs! :)

Hang on Jen.

The pain gets better really soon. My doctor never ordered ANY narcotic medication for me at all, even while I was in the hospital, and I was SO worried. I had a laprascopic surgery the year before my VSG for a hernia repair, and took narcotic pain medication for almost two weeks. So I was worried BIG time. But by day 5 or 6, I was completly pain free.

I really think the key is to get up and get moving and keep moving. The day of surgery, I slept most of the day, so that night, I couldn't sleep. I got up and walked the halls almost the entire night. And I kept walking the next couple of days. By the time I was discharged on my second post op day, I was feeling really good, and had worn a rut in the hall way where I had walked almost 24 hours a day for the previous two days.

I had some pain pills left over from the laprascopic surgery the year before, and I took them to Mexico (had my surgery in Mexico) with me. And I never needed a single one, and believe me, I am a wuss when it comes to pain!

Keep active and you will feel great in no time. Keep posting and let us all know how you are doing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
