Need Support From Others Who Have Had Thee Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 4/18/11 at 271. I am 10 months out and weigh 207. I stalled for a while due to not exercising but am exercising and loving it. Weight loss began again..but slowly. I feel so good, but I feel i should have lost a lot more at this point. A little bummed about that.

What was your starting weight? I am 6 weeks out and had a gain last week of 2 lbs I freaked out. (see gained and freaking) I started this journey at 341 in September, by surgery December 12 I weighted 337, and am now today down to 291. I have realized it is not about the weight but the inches also, yes I gained but still had lost inches(3.5 inches lost) for the week. Our bodies change so much in a matter of a week it is just amazing.

Keep your chin up and try not to be bummed out it will get better.

Look at old pics of your self and see how far you have come in just a short time hopefully that will help get rid of the bummed feeling.

Not all of us can lose all of our weight in the first 9-12 months. Sometimes you just need to ignore what others have lost and focus on what you have lost, as well as gained. I lost more than 100 pounds, but I gained 15 pounds of muscle, so I like to include that in my overall numbers. Just keep exercising, eating right, and it will come off eventually. Keep your spirits up! :)

Try not to focus on what others are doing. I know that as soon as I start seeing how people hit their goal 6 months after surgery, I get depressed. Focus on how much healthier (and lighter) you are compared to your starting point. Every person will have a different experience & journey with this surgery. It's excellent to get support here, but don't forget that your journey won't match up with anyone elses!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
