Can Using Coconut Oil On Skin Cause Gain?

Recommended Posts

I was on sleeved on Jan 11 and have lost 22lbs! I used some coconut oil on my skin because I was told it would help with loose skin. I weighed myself and gained 3 lbs! I've been on full liquids and have been following my diet to the letter. Is fat absorbed through the skin? Please no opinions, only facts. Thanks in advanced, I'm freaking out!

yes it your skin can absorb the oil as fat. its one of the reasons they tell you when you are doing HCG not to use oils.. Mainly because your body is in ketosis and the since while on full liquids you actually intaking a certain amount of carbs as well your body acts like its on Atkins ... well adding oil basically acts like adding a tone of carbs to atkins. so just be careful as to what you put on topically.

Coconut oil cannot be absorbed into the body to be expended or retained as calories. It can be absorbed, however. Coconut is one of the oils that naturally have Vitamin E - one of the Vitamins that can be both absorbed and used by the body after being absorbed. It also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

The skin can absorb and apply many things, but I have looked and cannot find concrete medical evidence that your body could absorb enough to affect your weight loss. I have forwarded your question to someone who will be able to give us an answer, but don't know whe he will get my message.

Your skins like a sponge. Hence why they make transdermal products. I thought it was cocoa butter that one would use to lighten scars.

Blackanese25 Pm me on what you know about HCG. And I will tell you what its made out of

Transdermal products are (i think) broken down into smaller compounds than what the oil in coconut is. Many transdermal products also have chemicals that make the skin and capilaries more capable of absorbing the chemicals in the patch.

I forwarded the question to a friend of my Hubby who is currently working on transdermal applications for several types of conditions. If he looks up long enough to give me an answer I will pass it on. I can't say when that will be - he has forgot to go on vacation before whe he is working the way he is right now, lol.

Anything can be made to be be transdermal through the use of DMSO or Plo-gel. Oils, acids, and other liquids are easily absorbed without the added DMSO.

But I understand what you were getting after. And your right about the gel making products easierto be absorbed by the skin.

You can take any kind of pill or Vitamin and crush them up and mix well with DMSO "its in the vet section at a feed store" and make your own transdermal products.

Now keep in mind that you would need to use more of the Vitamins crushed up to get the desired strength that you want due to the lower absorption rate.

I know it seems like alot of mess but when you have a hard time chocking down pills this is an easy alternative.

Yeah I know....I know way to much

Try an experiment

#1. Next time weigh yourself before you bath then weigh yourself immediately after. 5lb difference in most occasions

#2. Take a glass of faucet Water and place it on a table. Take a clorine test strip and test the h2o. Note the level. Take your fingers and place them inside the glass and swish them around for 2 minutes. Test Water again. Note that all the clorines gone.

The skins amazing. Gotta remember its our biggest organ

Okay - my friend I spoke of earlier says it might be possible, but it seems extreme.

THEN I remembered a friend that if i recall correctly put coconut oil in a whip cream dispenser (the kind that takes the nirous oxide tubes) so it would whip it and she used less - but I don't know if it was associated with weigh loss or gain.

He did mention that you would have to be using a large amount of oil - perhaps in an attempt to distribute it well?

Coconut oil is about 40 caories a teaspoon, so to gain 3 lbs from the oil if you gained every calorie you added to your skin (but you wouldn't) you would need about 5.5 cups of coconut oil. If you figured in the amount you do not absorb, which I do not know how much it is, I forgot to ask, then you are looking at 11 cups of oil for say, 50% absorption. But you would not process it like if you had ate it, and your body in return burns a small amount of calories to process things transdermally.

That's all I have so far - but keep us informed on what you think it is.

PS - I forgot. I have a massage therapist that used to say "save coconut oil for your massages".I wonder if it is to use as little as possible and still get the benefits?

I use it after every single bath and diaper change on my 17lb daughter. I honestly don't think it would be putting your weight loss at risk.

Thank you all for going above and beyond to get information for me! I spoke with the nurse at my Dr's office and she said it will not cause weight gain. We discovered that the weight gain was propably caused by my recent increase in Water intake. I finally drank over 64 ozs! My cells are rehydrating! Thanks again to all who responded! BTW I weighed again this morning and the 3 lbs were gone! WHEW : )

Wow i missed the part of how much gained. I focused on absorption rather than product vs weight. I can see you absorbing roughly 50-100 calories per application if your doing a large area. Absorptions possible but not to that extent.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
