Mushies/purees Not Going Down Very Well - What To Do?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost three weeks post-op. I have been on mushies/purees this week as per my post-op diet, and they are not sitting well at all. I do fine with liquids. But all mushies I've tried (unsweetened apple sauce; soft scrambled eggs; refried beans) have made me a little sick; I get full super fast (an ounce or half an egg and I'm done), and then I start burping like stuff is coming up, and my stomach feels unsettled, and I get diarrhea and slight nausea.

What gives? Should I go back to liquids for a few days and then try again? Is this normal?

my doctor told me what doesn't settle now may in the future. if necessary stay on Liquid Protein diet and try once a day some sort of mushie. Try a part of a banana even if it is one bite every minute. Don't do more than one type at a time and see what settles.

I think I may do that. Maybe I introduced them too fast (meaning too many new things per day). And I really hope this isn't permanent because I've felt fairly miserable today.

Ophelia, You've already figured out what to do. :) Go back a step and try again tomorrow or the next day. We all heal at different rates and your sleeve may not be ready yet. As for the volume, that's about what I could do at your stage. :)

My surgeon actually recommends going back a stage any time you have sliming or vomitting. After I got sick the other night, I did full liquids the next day, just to make sure Rex was okay. :)

I've been lucky in that I've not had any significant discomfort or intolerance at any stage. However, if you're having issues it could be too much too soon, or you're eating too fast. LIke the others said, take a step back for a day or two and see how it goes - once you try the mushies/purees again, make sure you are eating VERY slowly. That may help a lot.

I think I may be eating too fast too. I was such a fast eater before. I've slowed down significantly but probably not enough because I notice that when I'm done I feel full, but a few minutes later I feel sick and TOO full.

Thanks, ladies.

Lissa, you're six months out now - how much can you take in now at once?

I'm not Lissa, but I'm almost 6 months and typically have about 4-6 oz per meal (depending on what I'm eating). I usually have about 3 oz of meat (chicken, beef, etc.), a very small salad or serving of veggies, and sometimes a small serving of carbs.

One more question please. Since when have you been able to eat this amount?

I see you're about two months out. How much are you eating, and how are you feeling?

Hi ocean-ophelia! I'm feeling great. Seems our food progression is similar. On my third week I basically continued with full liquids and "sampled" a little thing here or there. Half an egg would have been way too heavy and too much. I couldn't finish 1 ounce of anything comfortably. Try 1/2 ounces. My samplings were more for the taste and experimentation purposes. My nutrition was definitely coming from shakes. With smaller amounts your feeling of nausea, diahrea and unsettled stomach will probably be reduced.

We don't all progress at the same speed. A few days ago I realized I could eat 2-1/2 ounce of some meats and I was like "WOW!" It happened from one day to the next. Be patient, you will be fine.

I'm in the same boat as you girl! 3 weeks out, I went out and bought literally EVERYTHING on the suggested 3 week post- op food list. Let's just say too much of a good thing too soon. I did step back, added more liquids back, and felt better...still need to get eyes, brain, and stomach on the same page!

Thanks, Dorrie! I don't "like" this picture as much as my last one, but I figured it was time to update it, since I'm due to take more pictures in six days! I am taking a pic at least once a month so that I can see and show my progress on my way to goal. Hopefully, they will help motivate me once I reach goal as well!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
