Cleaned Out My Closet

Recommended Posts

I start back to work the week after next, so I thought I might do a bit of housekeeping in my closet. First, I tried on the few pair of pants I generally wear for work. They had to go! I was swimming in them. Then I tired on pants I've held onto because I "thought" one day they might fit. Yeah, they fit. That gives me pants for at least a month or two.

Next onto shirts. I had beautiful silk blouses which I bought and could not wear becuase of my arm-n-hammer arms. I thought, Finally, I'll get to wear them. Not gonna happen...again, I was swimming in them. Dang, and they were nice and expensive blouses. Anyway, tried on the smaller one and yeah buddy! Look's like I'm not going to be wearing my turtleneck any longer!

Well, that clear out a 1/4 of my my closet. How about ya'll...how much did you clean out by your 1st month post op?

For me, it took about 6 weeks before my clothes started to feel loose enough to need to change sizes. Even though I had lost a TON of weight, my size didn't really change. It was frustrating, but I knew it would happen. Common sense told me it would. Then, I dropped sizes quickly. I was in 38s (which I had kept in a box in the garage hoping one day I would be back in them) for only two weeks! Size 36s for about two months. I have been at 34s since but these are getting loose now.

So, at about 8 weeks I had to unload my ENTIRE wardrobe, except for a few wool sweaters which I washed and dried on HOT to shrink them. It worked!

Congrats on your re-sizing!

I KWYM. I was thrilled when I finally could wear a pair of jeans again, rather than ship's sails passing for pants! Now, I've dropped 3 sizes in them in less than 2 months. I give up on buying new jeans and will just stick to "work pants" until I get closer to goal.

I am 5.5 months out, and I've had to change my closet completely twice. My first complete change was purchased through second hand stores. Now, I have bought some shirts and things at real stores because I figure a "large" won't be too large.

I cleaned out my closet on New Years Eve. I decided that was a good "out with old" day. I had been putting things in bags and bringing them to the church prior to that, but just little by little. On New Years I went crazy and got rid of almost everything in my closet and dresser drawers. I am 3 months out and have dropped from a size 20/22 to a comfortable 16 and some 14's. I went from a 2XL top to a regular Large or XL. I am a busty so I still need XL's for the girls. I ended up bringing 4 large black garbage bags overflowing with clothes to the church. It felt so good! My closet is a little thin right now, but my Mom let me "shop" in her closet and she gave me some sweaters and stuff to get through the winter. I also bought a couple of pairs of jeans (which are already getting big). I am trying not to shop too much, but I am going on a cruise in 4 weeks and do need some stuff. Plus, I am finding shopping addicting! I used to hate to shop. Hated trying on, hated how I looked, just hated it. Now I'm loving it!

It is such a good feeling throwing out (or in my case donating) your clothes. Not sure how many I threw out in the first month but I have lost count of how many bags I have filled now.

It is such a good feeling looking at my closet and seeing the shrinking clothes.I never really realised that I had so many clothes but I must have as I am always doing trips to the goodwil with clothes.

Now looking forward to throwing out my filler size clothes.

I hate shopping...sizes are so random from store to store. I am on my 8th month and I have nothing. The dress I wore today was a hand me down and it was super baggy. My winter coat is fine for this winter, but it is now too big. I love the change of course, but trying all these clothes on knowing that in a month they won't fit is super annoying. I have this bag of hangers...like 50 hangers that used to have something on them. I have about 15 items of clothing, and the dress I wore today has to go. So that leaves 14. It is probably the worst part of surgery for me...but even though it is the worst part...I will take it. What is even crazier is that I have to buy something the day before I wear it (special occassions) which gives me no time to figure out what size I am or what will look good on me. I have a wedding to go to in March, a bridal shower in Feb and a bachelorette party. Can you tell I just don't like shopping :)

I'm at goal (finally!) and have totally emptied my closet three times. More than once I bought ahead in a size and wound up giving away or donating clothing items that still had tags on them! It's gotten to the point that when I buy new clothes I leave the tags until I'm ready to wash and wear them.

I didn't get to revamp my wardrobe at 1 month, however. I think it took me about two months to lose enough weight that I had to invest in new clothes, and it wasn't really until 50 pounds off that I needed to invest in my first new wardrobe.

I just did what I think will be my last wardrobe purchase. I spent a small fortune but I now have a closet full of clothes I can wear right now - there isn't a single item in there too small or too big. And the good news is that I'm pretty sure that these clothes will still fit me in a year, or two years, provided I can keep my husband away from my laundry. But I had to buy EVERYTHING - underthings, socks, shoes, clothes, a jacket, etc. because nothing I had still fit me.

And to answer your question? I have given away six tall kitchen garbage bags full of clothes and I still have six large Rubbermaid totes of clothing in my basement waiting for a new home. I also had to give away four jackets and about forty pairs of shoes (I lost a shoe size, too). I went from a size 20/XXL to a 6/S had clothes for every size in between. I promise there have been some very happy people in my life, because most of those clothes were only worn for a month or two before they got too big!

In my closet I am having trouble parting with alot of my xl tops, sweaters, jackets, and suit jackets. I am in disbelief that I will not be able to wear them again. Yes, this is insane. But this weekend, I will clean all the cloths out that are too big. I own 1 pair of jeans, 4 blouses, and some new under wear. oh and 1 new bra. Not much of a wardrobe. My closet will be empty. Then it's my drawers. I can't even wear my exercise cloths, they are way toooooo big. LOL.... I really do love it though. It's a new me.... ;)

Congrats to all who have cleaned out their closets! I'm too afraid of buying new clothes or shoes right now. I so wanted a pair of boots, but my mom talked me off that ledge saying, "your calves will go down more by next year....buy them then". She's right. I walked away from the pretty boots, but I know next year will be different.

I need to clear out some of my old shorts. I've got plenty which are a size 24, there are a few 22's, a 20 and a 16 which I've held on to.

Good luck. I plan to hit 2nd hand stores during my transition. I hate spending all that money and watching it go down the drain...but in a good way.

That is one of the things I was totally not expecting ... shoe size change. I went from a 12 wide to an 11 normal. That's something they don't put in the brochure!

I have clothes in my closet that I can get BACK into - size 8's - so I am covered with jeans and tops til I go under that (if I do which I hope to) but as far as getting rid of xl tops - that's not going to happen - I LIKE wearing flowy tops - always have. Even when I was 115 pounds I still wore 3X mens sweatshirts with leggings sometimes. But I sure am looking forward to getting back into my size 8 jeans that's for sure.

I was surprised that I was dropping sizes faster than what the weight loss was showing. Started at 34 pant and 3x shirt at surgery and now 3 months later in into 18/20 pants and XL shirts. I haven't cleaned out my closet yet but I really need to. I don't buy many clothes at any one time now since they won't be around for long. I still have a long way to go but loving every minute of it.

I am almost 5 weeks post-op and I only have about 5% of my closet left. We had a garage sale last week & I sold all my clothes for cheap. The rest went to Goodwill.

I went to the last day of a church sale 2 weeks ago & got 3 huge lawn sized garbage bags full of clothes to last me till I get to goal. Jeans sizes 2-16 & shirts sizes XS-L. All for 6 bucks lol. Some of it is super cute too, I just can't imagine ever fitting into most of it.

I separated it out into a "small" bag in the back of my closet, a "medium" bag in front of that & I washed all the 12's-16's to wear now :) I'm just lacking in XL shirts for right now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
