Question to those that have been sleeved. This is my second day post-op and I am confused by my tummy talking to me. If I drink too much I get this pressure in my chest, then I take smaller sips but still get the same pain, then there are times when there is just plain ol pain/discomfort. For today I have had a total of 4oz broth and the same amout of Jello + a total of 16oz of Water. Am I just having post op pain, is it hunger pains or am I being told I'm full.

How did you guys figure out how to read what your stomach is telling you? What does full feel like when you are sleeved?

Thanks for any insight.

Tracy

Are you still in the hospital?? The second day for me was not that long ago and I do not think that I even had as much as you did. I know that I was just taking small sips of what ever they gave me and the day after I was drinking gatorade. I did not have any Jello as I was in Mexico and I do not think they really eat much Jello there. I did have discomfort but I think that was from the pressure of maybe drink too much too fast. You can try ice chips as they melt slowly in your mouth so it does into the sleeve slower. I guess that my stomach gurgled a little but I did not associate that with hunger. I still do not get stomach hunger but I do get head hunger especially when smelling food or seeing comercials on tv.

I think that if you take it slow and try to get in as much Fluid as possible that will be good. Maybe a sip every few minutes or what you can tolerate. You need to concentrate in getting as much Fluid in as possible. Have you tried any chicken broth? Is that something that you doctor told you that you could have as I know that everyone seems to be getting a different post op diet depending on who their doctor was.

Hang in there and you will do fine.

You're doing great with your Fluid intake. At 2 days I could hardly eat ice chips without that "gas pain". It is completely normal, and does get better with time. I am 2 weeks out now and I can take regular sips without pain.

Good luck!

Did you happen to have a hiatal hernia repaired as well? I did, and when I took even the smallest sips I felt discomfort in my chest. It goes away after a couple of days so nothing really to be too worried about. If it stays with you for a while, you might check with your Dr. Congrats on your surgery!

Thanks everyone. I am out of the hospital where they monitored my intake & output very closely. Right now I am soooooo thirsty I am taking tiny sips quite often. I am finding after making some camomile tea I am handling warml liquids better than cold. I do have the extreme gas pressure and pain. I'm going thru the omg please don't let me stretch anything fear which I know is unreal considering how much I have drank. I just want to make sure what I know what the new full feels like lol

You won't really feel "full" on liquids. Right now you have post-op swelling so it's difficult for even liquids to go down, but they leave the stomach quite quickly and don't fill you up like food will eventually. You cannot stretch anything with liquids. Keep drinking as much as you can. I found that hot liquid was easier to tolerate than cold too. Now I like cold better except in the morning.

Come to think of it, Vance, my doc said that I had a hernia, which he repaired during surgery. Maybe that is why I had so much trouble with chest discomfort when drinking during those first few days. That is what brought me back to the hospital for 3 more days - couldn't keep Fluid down and became dehydrated.

They never said anything to me about a HH, but seriously does the gas pain ever go away? I'm assuming that pain that hits me in my rib cage for no reason, or when i take a deep breath is gas pains. I've tried walking, gas ex, tea warm, cinnamon... Everything short of cutting me open again lol. I kno this seems ridiculous but this really hurts, and I'm a baby.

Any help or just reassurance that it will go away & I haven't broke something would make me feel better.

TYIA Tracy

Make sure you're walking a bunch - that really helps with the gas. I didn't need to take anything for it but a lot of people say the Gas-X strips are extremely helpful.

the gas that you are feeling if that is what it is, in that area . gas x wont help its the gas they blow up your abdomen with so they can work on you then they close you up with this trapped in you, Not you new stomach. wishing you fast healing,

Being thirsty is the first sign that you aren't getting enough liquids. I was really thirsty the 3rd & 4th day (i was home from the hospital.). I did the best I could, but it wasn't till the 5th day that I was able to get enough fluids. My sis came to help me, and she went to the store and bought every clear liquid imaginable and gave me sample cups. Warm chicken broth & SF OceanSpray Cranberry were what finally worked. And walking. Walking. Walking. Walking. :-) It will get better!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
