smalldreams 0 Posted July 29, 2006 After researching lots of different pre op diets this is what I am following. Being banded August 4th - 1 week to go! Each day starting today I am eating: 3 slim fast optima shakes or protien powder shakes Water and decafeinated tea w/ splenda (unlimited) 1 Protein meal (plain tuna or baked skinless chicken breast) sugar free Jello sugar free popsicles spinach or green Beans Any of you think with this I will be succesful in "shrinking my liver"? Thanks for any input!
LapBandit 5 Posted July 29, 2006 I'm not very "seasoned" but my doc required an all liquid/no sugar pre-op diet. Your doctor didn't give you specific instructions? I wasn't allowed any solid food for a full week prior to surgery.
Elisabethsew 50 Posted July 29, 2006 I would not call myself "seasoned" but I am a critical care RN and can address the liver issue. As long as you're taking in low fat (<10% of total calories) and low sugar and getting in enough Protein, you will shrink your liver and lose weight. From what you posted, it appears you're 100% on track!
smalldreams 0 Posted July 29, 2006 Well my doctor does not require the pre op diet, but suggests it because of the benefits of reducing your liver size and condition. He said anyone with a BMI of 40 or higher should do the pre-op diet to eliminate risks. Low fat, low carbs and high Protein is what he suggests. So... I just did my own research. Anyway thanks for the feedback. I really really appreciate it! I am so glad to have found this board... everyone is friendly and SO helpful!
mousecrazy 2 Posted July 29, 2006 As our favorite RN says, your pre-op diet is good...my doc did not require all liquid, just the type of diet you have put together. My doc took pictures, in color mind you, and showed me my liver...said he could tell I had complied with the pre-op diet just by seeing the color and condition of my liver. So, there was actual proof! Good luck! Cindy
