Hey guys,

I have a tooth that has been bothering me and they want to do a root canal next Tuesday 2 weeks before my surgery date. Do you guys think I should do it before the surgery or after if the tooth is hurting? I know I will only be able to take tylenol for pain because of the no aspirin or blood thinner rule. Is pain medication an absolute no no too? I think it is. I wonder if I should just wait until after my surgery to get the root canal. What do you guys think?

Not that it's exactly comparable, but I ended up with a double ear infection 10 days out and ended a round of antibiotics the day before surgery. I was totally fine.

The NSAID pain relievers are the ones they want us to avoid because they thin the blood I think. If you could get something other than a NSAID for the pain it might be ok. I'd call and ask the surgeon's office. They might even be able to suggest something.

Thank you Hadouni!

I may go ahead and get it. I think I'm worried because the tooth is somewhat infected and I'm on antibiotics to get rid of the infection before the root canal on Tuesday. I am scared that it will hurt really bad when they do the root canal if there is any infection left. I know I can't get surgery with an infected tooth so i think I should go ahead with the root canal and just get some sort of non-NSAID medication to deal with the pain. I am only taking amoxicillin for the infection now.

I had a root canal just 10 days before my sleeve, I was given antibiotics and had NO pain what so ever. If your tooth is infected, you" ll want that cleared up before surgery. Mine was abscessed. I' m three weeks post op and having a second root canal on Friday. I am taking liquid antibiotics as a prevention this time, as this tooth is not abscessed, but died because of the previous infection. This tooth has never even a filling :-( I wish you the best, hopefully you're having a reputable endodontist and not a general dentist do it?

Thank you Happy! I think I am going to go ahead and get the root canal. I am not happy that my tooth is infected right before my surgery. I have been taking amoxicillin and noticed the infection is taking a while to go away and I think the root canal cannot be avoided. I was hoping to wait until ater surgery but this tooth won't quit! It has a hole in it and it is abscessed as well. My gums are hugely swollen. I have been able to avoid the dreaded huge chipmunk cheek problem so far thanks to the amoxicillin I think.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
