Recommended Posts

I feel like perhaps my instructions for food may be ahead of what I can eat. I was sleeved 2 weeks ago Wed. evening. Individual opinions greatly appreciated - what should I be eating? What shoulod be my calories goal/water and or liquids?

This is how my diet is going to progress when I get mine done. My surgeon is on the conservative side when progressing to the next level, and he has a very very very low leak rate. He will have me on full liquids, as you can see, up through week 3. Then blenderizedfoods for 2 weeks after that, then so on.

Phase One Bariatric Clear liquid Diet (The first few days)

Phase Two Bariatric Full liquid diet (Weeks 1-3)

Phase Three Bariatric pureed Protein Diet (Weeks 4-5)

Phase Four Bariatric Soft Protein Diet (Weeks 6-8)

Where you are right now, this plan would have you at 60 oz. of fluids per day, and 40-50 gm of Liquid Protein. His reason for that is that is protects you from early complications, and gives you good nutrition for healing. Heres what he suggests:

What to Drink

All phase 1 liquids (clear) (also, kellogs k20 is clear and has protein)

BariEssential™ protein supplementOptifast® protein supplement (contains lactose)

Bariatric Advantage™ protein supplement

Milk or Lactaid (lactose free) milk

Soy milk

Strained fat free cream Soups (American Heart Association green label with heart)

Strained cold cereals (oatmeal, farina, cream of wheat)

Im just giving you all of this, so you can see another docs perspective on it. I havent had this done yet, so I cant personally comment, but this is an example of a more cautious approach than some Ive seen on here.

You hangin in there, sweetie???

That was weird! When I clicked this in, it splayed out a bunch of code or something! Forgive my lack of punctuation, but it made everything all freaky, so I have to take out the apostrophes. Weird man. Probably because I copied and pasted from an emailed doc. Oh well...

Here's the way I see it: Doing clear liquids or full liquids for too long won't do damage. Eating too soon has the potential to do damage. Better safe than leaking. It may be more stressful to your mind to keep on liquids, but it'll be worth it.

leonor- 2 weeks on CLEAR?? That does seem mighty excessive from what everyone says here on this forum. Is this particular to your case? Maybe there's a specific reason he kept you on clear, have you asked? Does he do this with everyone? Were you given a patient packet with instructions?

Thank you. Yes, I am doing my best to hang in. My Hubby has, again, been a Lighthouse in a storm. He is with me nearly every second, and my friends have been so supportive - I am including you guys here!

I cannot say that it has totally sunk in that my Mom has passed away. I am glad now that I had not told her about my WLS - I would always wonder if she had been worrying about me when she passed. I have noticed a trend mentally to focus on my foods and Water a bit more, so I think the initial shock is wearing off, and my mind is getting back into the here and now. Enough to take care of my healing.

God Bless!

Dr. Aceveshas done many many sleeves and has only had one leak to my knowledge.

His patients do 10 days of clear liquids. He said it doesn't have to be completely clear, just thin. I know he allowed soy slender, and putting unflavored Protein powder into things like gatoraide, crystal light, etc , broth, Jello, Isopure

Then 10 days of full liquids You can have Protein shakes, pudding, Soup that is blended, thin cream of wheat, and basically anything you can get through a straw.

Then 10 days of mushie foods. tuna, string cheese, cottage cheese, refried Beans,

ground beef or turkey, etc. There is a good recipe in the food forum for the ricotta bake which is a great mushie recipe. I hope this helps!

I had 4 days of clear liquids, 4 weeks of full liquids (my full liquids included cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, etc.). Then I had 4 weeks of purees/mushies (including canned tuna/chicken, soft cheeses, etc.). Then I progressed to normal soft foods for another month.

My liquids target is 72 oz/day and Protein 75-90 grams/day.

I had to do clear liquids for the first week post op. My 1 week post op was today and they told me I could move on to soft foods like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, etc!! NO WAY! I am moving myself up to full liquids for another week, then pureeds for a week or so,I don't want to get a leak! If you are 2 weeks out I would say,in my opinion, you can proabably be on full liquids or even pureeds.

Allformy4 - thank you for responding. I am on week 4 now but unfortunately I am still on liquids for a yet-to-be-determined period of time.

I am in Houston, and my Mom passed away a week post-op. I flew in and tried my best to handle everything, and pushed myself too far. I finally unravelled as I returned home. My last flight I became so violently ill they thought I may have created a leak in my sleeve (it was one of the most turbulent flights I have ever been on).

I am recovering and return to work tomorrow.

Good to see you are taking care of yourself!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
