Did Everyone Here Go On A Liquid Diet Before Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Mine was 2-week diet of "their" food. Mainly liquid, but some Pasta every night. I lost 15lbs during that time. Did I cheat. Yes, brazilian steakhouse, a grilled cheese sandwich, and 2-tablespoose of pulled pork. Mind you, my cheat occured 6-days to 1week before my surgery.

It may depend on how they do the surgery. My sister had laproscopic surgery but there were five incision points I believe. And she was able to eat up until midnight the night before. When I get my surgery it will be through one opening in my belly button and I am required to do a two week liquid diet prior to surgery. Being able to get to the stomach portion being removed and being able to move the liver easily might come into play on this one.

My surgery was through my belly button and I didn't have to do a pre-op diet. Anyone with a 40 BMI or lower does not get a pre-op diet at my surgeons practice.

My dr. doesn't make us do pre-op liquid diet. His rules were clear liquid for 24 hours prior to surgery. I've seen my surgery on video tape, he actually had a special tool that held the liver up and out of his way. My starting BMI was over 45.

Nope, I never had to go on any sort of "liquid diet" until the day before surgery. Then I could only have Clear Liquids and some form of colon cleanser thing. But that was it! I was very happy i didn't have to do that 2 week thing most folks have to do now.

Someone attacked me in another thread, and it seems like arguing on the internet is silly. I have found it extremely healthy to talk to other individuals who are going through this process or are preparing to go through this process. It was kind of shocking to see all the different experiences we have been through. In another thread, I had learned that some surgeons do not "allow" their patients to have any Protein, stating things like it is crutch. I say this site is also very useful for people to learn that not all surgeons are the same, nor are they all responsible, nor are they all doing any good by their patients. I am so very grateful that my surgeon is very much on top of the necessary lifestyle and dietary needs. I was also very fortunate my surgeon has sleeved and RnY'd many many people I personally know, so I know I was in a quality program. Moral of this post....research, research, research. Learn as much as you can about not only your surgeon, but what kind of support he or she provides and what education they provide.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
