Weird Cravings Since Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 12/8/2011, and am on soft foods, I can pretty much handle whatever I eat as long as I take my time and chew it well, but lately I am craving hot stuff!! If I have chili I want to put hot sauce in it, when I have fish, I wanna put hot sauce on it. I know my NUT said that food tastes change, but I never liked hot things in the past...Anyone else have weird food cravings since surgery??

Heck, after being sleeved and living on liquids for weeks on end it's no surprise your taste buds want flavor!

I never really enjoyed spicy foods prior to surgery but I LOVE them now. I think part of it is that I still eat such small portions, and spicy or very flavorful foods feel satisfying and sort of replace the enjoyment of that overstuffed feeling I'd aim for after every meal. If I can't eat much, I want to make every bite wonderful, not bland and boring!

I get random cravings every once in awhile. It's just weird, because since being sleeved I don't really think about food that much. But, sometimes I'll just think "Ooh, this food sounds good. I want to eat it NOW." The cravings usually aren't triggered by anything, either.

I do enjoy different foods than I used to, too. I can understand wanting spicy food or food with a lot of seasoning that add flavor. Really greasy food or food high in starchy carbs make me sick now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
