I had my surgery back in March and have lost around 30 lbs since then. However, since the beginning of my weight loss experience, I have lost around 60lbs. I have gone from a size 22-24 to a 14. My doctor was happy with me when I saw her in November, as I am losing weight evenly. I don't have excess skin, except for around the belly. Am I expecting too much that I feel I should have lost more by now? I seem to go through period of loss, then i balance out and lose the inches and the skin shrinks. According to my goals, I am about 35-45lbs away.

My mom and I had a laugh when I saw her at Christmas time when she told me she started losing weight after I had the surgery instead of me.

Any suggestions? Should I let it go, as it still seems to be working for me, although slow?

Thanks

I think you are doing an amazing job.. you started out with a lower BMI than a lot of people kind of like me so you bound to lose weight at a slower rate. and honestly i wouldn't worry about it cuz where other people losing more quickly will have to worry about more excess skin, you already have most of that beat! thats actually what im hoping for.. i figure if i want to bump up my weightloss ill do it by hitting the gym. that way im losing weight but still protecting my skin by building lean muscle.

From the sounds of it you are doing a fantastic job so keep it up!!!!!! and by the looks of your ticker even tho its 30 lbs post op.. you are down 61 lbs!!! thats an amazing number! you didn't gain that in a few months so that fact that you lost in a a shorter amount of time is nothin to huff at.

Hope that helps but honestly i think your doin wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

LissyinTX,

I am in the same situation with being a slow loser. I was very concerned about the slow weight-loss at my first few post-op appointments with the surgeon and she was unconcerned, said it was nothing to worry about. Then I recently went in for my 3 month visit and now she is very concerned that I am not losing more weight. I am going to see another nutritionist and am going to support group meetings and I have to continue logging my food intake -- which is the part I hate the most. Despite the frustration at losing practically nothing in the last 6 weeks, I am glad that I had the surgery -- I love having a limiter on my food intake.

Thanks for posting about being a slow loser. I have a lot of weight to lose -- I am in the "super morbidly obese" catagory. Sometimes it is hard to read the postings about large amounts of weight loss in just a few months. It makes me wonder what I am doing wrong. It makes me feel like this is just another failed attempt to lose weight... but as long as I am generally moving downward on the scale I don't want to get too down about it.

Best wishes, MsC

Thanks Blackanese25, I appreciate it.

Ms. C, I am sorry to hear about the slow loss. I felt the same way when I was going into my check-up/follow-up, to the point that I was freaking out and annoying my coworkers. Keep your thoughts positive. If you need to talk to another nutritionist, go for it. I have also heard that sometimes the sleeve is the first step for some people that are heavily obese. They then go on to have a bypass to help the weight loss go even further. I know that isn't what a lot of people want, but it is an option I had heard about. Keep up with the support groups too. I am here to talk to too, since I feel like I am not losing anything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
