Finish Everything On Your Plate!

Recommended Posts

Get smaller plates? lol....sorry...couldn't help it. I hear ya on the finishing everythign on the plate, but can you control what is put on your plate? Maybe only put half of what you would normally put. Or only place what you can tolerate? That way you can empty your plate, but not at the risk of hurting you?

I don't finish, but don't throw it out either, I just learned to pack the left overs for lunch the next day or pack it in the fridge for another day. So far, so good :)

Now that I'm eating alot less food and have learned to take very small portions. I find myself watching my spouse eat. He is quite an eater. He just keeps eating and eating and eating. It is really bothersome for me because I am afraid of loosing him. He couldn't even walk the mall hardly yesterday. He weighs 230lbs and is 5'9". He is 68 years old. He doesn't really exercise. And he won't. It's like a disaster waiting to happen. I don't know how to get him to increase his exercise. He tells me that he's tired. :( Is anyone else struggling with this issue. I know it's my problem.

My husband is 32 years old, 5'11" and 280. I'm 5'9 and outweigh him 40 pounds, but he eats two to three times what I do at many meals. It amazes me. I tell him sometimes, " you really need to stop."

At first he didn't want me to have the surgery, but he is on board now. He actually said to me the other day," you know I might would consider that surgery too if you like yours." I was just stunned. I asked him what had changed his mind. He said, " I am dying. I have realized I am killing myself one bite at a time." :0(

I no longer think that throwing food away is a bad thing. I think it is extremely liberating to not care about the food. The idea that all food has to be finished, be it now or later, in my opinion is not healthy.

I'm not at the point of going out to eat on a regular basis yet, and so far the times I've gone out, I've had Soup. But as little as I get to eat now, I will not be bringing boxes home to eat the same thing all week. Restaurant leftovers don't really appeal to me a few days later (sometimes even the next day).

I'm not saying that I enjoy wasting food, but I am not going to lose any sleep over throwing excess away. Especially junk foods or stuff I am just tired of eating.

At this time my plan for eating out will likely be to get a side, and maybe have a bite or two of my husband's entree.

This is a topic that I think most of us struggle with. I too was alwasy told that I better finish what's on my plate or else. I grew up eating every single last morsel. To make things worse, I was NOT a picky eater so there was almost nothing left on my plate. The only exception was lima Beans lol. But it took quite a while for my mind to ease into the thought of eating less. Even after I was sleeved and was done with my liquid phase, easing my way back into solids, I still didn't know how to just back off and caused a lot of unnecessary pain to myself. I am 4 months out now and what has helped me was to use the smaller saucers for my meals or smaller condiment bowls, and I also pre-measure my food. I know now that my tummy can't hold any more than 4 maybe 5 oz of anything at one time. So, I start out with that. If I'm having more than one item in a meal, I measure it so that the total on my plate is no more than that 4 or 5 ounces. I loathe the feeling of being overstuffed so once I start getting to the point where the next bite might be uncomfortable, I stop eating. I still don't just throw the food away, I simply put it in a small container for my next meal. It's an every day struggle and you contsantly have to think about it, but you'll get better. I just really had to ask my self, "is this last bite going to bring me more joy or pain..." and also if the decision will be condusive to my overall goal.

putting food back is not a bad thing, but it can be bad if you eat out of the container, then put it back and eat it again later. Bacteria in the mouth can contaminate food. If I have a container of something small and I know I can not eat it all, I will scoop out the amount I can tolerate into another bowl or plate. Or it will take me 45 minutes to eat it.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
