I am 4 days post op...had my surgery on Wed the 11th. I am having problems with my drain. It keeps getting a stringy clot in the tube and I try to push it through and just have to work and work it...I'm only draining about 10ml now every 5 hours...don't know if that's bad or not. I know the less you drain the better...but this soon after? Any help would be appreciated...thank you.

Try milking your tube a couple times a day. My Fluid varied and I had a drain for 8 days. Sometimes it was very light, sometimes heavy. Sometimes red, sometimes clear yellow. it was normal. As long as the fluid was not milky or cloudy and you have proper suction in your bulb, you should be ok. I would call my surgeon or surg asst and double check for peace of mind.

I had my surgery on Tuesday the 10th and have a drain also. It is slowing down quite a bit now.I am getting about 25cc everyday. But the color and everything looks fine. I too had a stringy block kind of thing. I think eventually it just fell down into the bottle.Make sure you are collapsing the bottle part before plugging the pour spout. It is the suction that makes it work. My surgeon said there could be little bits of tissue and fat that will come out. Hang in there, I am happy I will get rid of it on Monday. Good Luck

I had a drain as well, but I was specifically told not to milk the tube. My instructions were to empty the drain morning and evening, collapsing the bottle by rolling it up to force out the air and putting the plug back in before releasing the bottle. It was kind of icky to drain it, but mine wasn't that horrible. Of course, I'm more than 4 months post op, so that may affect my memory of the drain. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
