My dad stayed in the hotel! There was lots of staff in the hospital, and my dad basically stayed there until visiting hours were open and closed. This gave me some time to work in my walking and breathing exercises and sleep!

I had my surgery with Dr Garcia and stayed at Hospital MI. The best thing that you can do is contact your coordinator and see what the policy is of the hospital that you will be staying at.....if they allow overnight guests. Also my package came with hotel for me. If I would have had someone with me they could have stayed in my room as I had 2 queen beds. I would assume that is the hospital will not let him stay that he would have to make a reservation at the hotel for 2 night for himself and pay for those nights. He could then stay with you once you are released from the hospital. I would call your coordinator asap to find out what you need to do.

I've already spoke with her and she said he can stay with me in the room. I'm wondering how comfortable he will be there 3 days is a long time. Just wanting some feed back from people that have been there done that.

I had surgery with Dr. Aceves. They provide your hotel room the night before surgery and then your travel buddy sleeps on a couch in the hospital room. It is not the most comfortable arrangement, but he will be able to be with you. My daughter went with me and she slept the whole time, which was fine with me. Once, I laid down on the couch and let her have the bed for a nap. Everyone there is very accommodating. I think your experience will be overall an excellent one. I wouldn't change anything. Kathe

I just had my sleeve by dr aceves this morning. My mom is staying with me in the hospital. She will be sleeping on the couch. It is a comfortable couch but if he is a tall man he may not be able to sleep straight. It is probably a little sorter than 6 feet.

I like having my mom with me to help me get things, or help change clothes, walk, etc

Btw- surgery day was great!! Not in any pain today. I'll have to see how it goes tomorrow.

Everyone I know has their family stay with them in the room. There is more than enough room. I do know some people who were bored in the room and stayed in the hotel during nice weather next to the pool.

I had the sleeve by Dr Aceves in Nov. My cousin came with me and stayed in the room. He ate in the cafeteria or a Chinese place across the street. He brought his computer and was able to get work done. The hospital has free Wifi.

BTW surgery is working great and I have not had any complications. Dr. Aceves was very good.

Can I ask a totally naive question? (Naive, because my insurance paid for my surgery). Is the surgery that much less expensive in Mexico? I went to a fantastic surgeon here who is natially known, and my OOP (if I hadn't had insurance) would have been $12,200 for surgery, hospital, and a lifetime of follow-up. Is it that much less expensive in Mexico, when you take into account travel? It's just something I never looked at.

I wish you the best of luck! I'm only two weeks out, and I'm so glad I had the surgery.

My surgery, that I have scheduled for March, is $5,000 with Dr. Kelly.

I live in California anyway, Santa Barbara infact, so it wasn't so big of a deal for me.

My insurance wouldn't pay, I am a student at UCSB so we have bad coverage, and in most of California the cheapest was about $20,000 not including hospital stay.

For me it was a better choice especially because I would have to travel to LA or SF to get my surgery anyway.

My surgery in Tijuana was $6000 and that included the scope for my lapband, removal of the lapband, the sleeve surgery, hospital, medications, hotel and transportation to and from the airport. the plane ticket round trip to San Diego was around $400. So for me $6400 compared to $40,000 out of pocket in Iowa was a no brainer. There is no surgeon in Iowa that comes even close to what you paid. I would have had to had 2 surgeries here in the US....the first to removed the band and then wait a month or 2 and then go back into the hospital and have the sleeve......now way....it was Mexico all the way for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
