Pre-op Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

I started the second phase of my pre-op diet on Friday (1/6/2012), it consists of 4 Protein shakes with 0 carbs, my Protein has 25gr of protein per shake. On Friday I cheated and ate some nuts, and I could only manage to drink 2 shakes. On Saturday I cheated again and ate 1 oz of meat sad.png , but I did manage to drink 3 shakes. On Sunday I did not cheat!!!! I drank 3 shakes. My surgery is tomorrow, and I am very glad I am not going to be drinking that many shakes anymore. My concern is that I have been losing too much weight! I have lost 6 pounds from Friday to Sunday. I know it might seem like a good thing, but Im worried its muscle I am losing, and I don't have much to start with.

Has anyone had something like this happen before surgery? Any thoughts are welcome.

Some doctors do not require a pre-op diet. The main reason is so that your fatty liver can shrink so they do not nick it when moving it around to get to the stomach. It makes for a better surgery as I understand it. Going off the prescribed menu is not that bad, but I would advise not doing so from this point forward. Your stomach will be like a baby's stomach and you really need to follow the eating guidelines so that you allow your stomach the time to heal properly. Complications can happen if you follow the guidelines but, you certainly do not want to increase your odds for issues down the road.

Just know, it does get better and those shakes will become part of your diet NOT your whole daily diet.

Hang in there and best of luck on your journey with your new tool!

1 oz of meat? Meh. I had 3 oz of raw ahi tunu last week. I think that's going to be my go to Protein after I'm sleeved. 3 oz of that fish was 19 grams of Protein with virtually no fat!!!

Still have managed to lose 13 pounds or so. Two more days to go with one only Clear liquids. Now I get to see how that Isopure liquid tastes like. I was told that it was "tolerable."

Sleeve sister!

I think I will stick to the Protein powers and shakes for good. They are low cal and the more Protein you get the better you will fare. The Pro Max and Isopure powder are 22-26 gm of protein that can be mixed in 6 oz of liquid.< /p>

Using the Torani syrups and other tricks like a tiny amount of frozen fruit will make these taste like shakes. I did the chocolate powder with Torani chocolate Syrup, half coffee and half 1% milk and it was SOOOOO good. Why not add cinnamon to just a chocolate shake? Later down the line: a tiny piece of banana?

I can understand why people want to give up on things like Medifast. I tried one of thoise and almost heaved.

I started my liquid diet Friday. First day cheated with a banana, second cheated, etc....my head hurts and I feel week. I wrestle with psych patients all day and feel I am not getting the nutrients I need to focus and function....I havent gained any weight but I havent lost any. I did lose the 10% they required but I should lose more.

I have the nows food whey protein isolate, the unflavored kind. I am hating them now because I had to drink it as is, with no carbs, and I am in my native country until a month after surgery, here they don't have many carb friendly options. But I am planning on using it in Calorie Countdown milk if I don't become lactose intolerant, I love their milk, it only has 3 carb in 8oz, and their choco milk has 4 carbs in 8oz. Its the lack of variety thats killing me. Lucky for me I am not a coffee drinker, not much of a tea drinker either, I like my milk =)

Saying a prayer that all will go smoothly. I'm sure it will. Attitude is at leat 50% of it if not more. There is one lady out there who is having a lot of trouble, and while I do not doubt that everything is as bad as she says, I think that less regret about it and more looking forward to the future would help. Like the guy in the GNC store told me when I complained about the taste of the clear liquid Isopure (40 gm. of Protein per bottle BTW), he told me, "You do what you gotta do."

I have to have 2 weeks of Clear liquids and then 2 more weeks of full liquids before I ever get to mushies. I think it's going to suck, but then you do what you gotta do.

Even with the pre-op diet I am feeling fantastic and not bloated.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
