Watching Other People Overeat Grosses Me Out. What Is With That?!

Recommended Posts

I just felt grossed out when someone was eating a plate of chicken wings. I have been with them while the did this many times in the past but right now it grossed me out. What is with that? I am shocked by this feeling! Anyone else experience this?

Yup!! All the time! I think it's soooo engrained in us to eat slow and savor every bite, that when someone comes along and just chows down, it revolts me!!! Crazy! Cause I used to be one of those people!!!

All the time. Like Fern said, we tend to chew our food slower and enjoy it more.

I guess I should be ashamed to admit this, but I always enjoyed Travel Channel's Man vs. food.< /em> I can't watch it anymore. It makes me nauseous.

Oh, bionic broad, I def feel you on Man vs Food!! I could tolerate him before, but watching him eat now gags me, too!!

I also cannot sit down for a meal with my 21 year old son and his girlfriend. Their table manners are fine, but I can't stand seeing the speed and amounts they eat! My son ate 4 hot digs at one 5 minute sitting the other night!!!

And, restaurant portions are out of this world huge!! I ordered wings yesterday and the plate they brought me had 10 huge wings on it...for an appetizer portion! I guess it's me that has changed, but wow!!

Years ago, the tv show ER had two doctors of African descent talking about portion sizes in America. One of the doctors said she had seen a woman drinking a "bucket of soda" that morning. I have a better idea what she meant now!

YES!!! Just last night I had to turn the other way because I felt like my husband was inhaling his food!! Gross! Portion sizes and just recently certain foods (super sweet, fried or greasy), make my stomach want to roll!! So strange how things change! lol

This isn't about watching people eat, but sorta related.

I have already found myself noticing people like me (obese) and wondering what their story is and what they want to do about their weight, too. its a very weird feeling that I feel ashamed of sad.png I just feel like I am on the road to feeling better physically and about my appearance, and I wish that for them too, but its very patronizing and I need to cut it out.

I think its kind of like the phenomenon of when you have a new car or something and suddenly notice that car everywhere. I think it will fade. I am counseling myself about it.

Oh my gosh! I am so glad you guys responded to my post. I feel very weird about this. Some of the feelings I get are shame, disgust, fear, frustration, confusion, sadness....it is just about the weirdest pile of emotions for me. I know I used to scarf it down like that so I bet that's where my shame, disgust and sadness comes in. The rest of the emotions could be what I am feeling for that person??? I too used to love Man vs. food but now I have zero interest. Portion sizes have gotten out of control, its true! Even when my 8 yr old orders off the kids menu its too big for a kid. I think I am just now seeing my old way of eating for what it really was and I'm trying to process it along with the emotions that come with that. This will be the main topic at my next therapy appt. Must be a food addiction thing.....hmmmm....perhaps?

It doesn't upset me at all. I do look at portion sizes and think it is outrageous what restaurants serve. I almost think it is criminal. My boyfriend can chow down. I probably miss it more than anything. Feeling full is not the same feeling anymore even when I can't eat another bite. I really miss that feeling. I have been watching fear factor and when they eat really gross things I get really sick!!

I am so glad I am not the only one!!!! Over the holidays I watched my family pile their plates so very full of food and then eat so fast that if I looked away and then looked back it was gone!! I am not grossed out by it but shocked by it, mostly because I KNOW I did the exact same thing before surgery.

My hubby has lost over 100 pounds by doing WW and exercising. He still piles his plate full and eats wayyyy tooo fast!! I am working on slowing him down and his portion size.

I feel the same. LOL but I think we are jealous of them being able to eat so much and we can't.

I notice myself marveling over the amount of food I see other people eat now and can't believe I ever ate that much AND more!!!

I went out to lunch today with the girls in my department to Chipotle. I had never eaten there before and I knew I would end up with leftovers. Well if any of you have ever been there the burrito they make is monstrous. The burrito bowl is just as big. I could not believe my friend ate an ENTIRE burrito and she is not a heavy person, just a normal sized person but I looked at the size of that burrito and wondered exactly where she put the whole thing, is her stomach really stetching that big? Yikes....

I would have never thought twice about it before surgery.

I am a food addict. There are soooo many emotions that go along with realizing it, fighting it, and relapsing. I saw a show where the guy compared being a food addict to being an alcoholic who has to have a drink 4 to 6 times a day but not too much. I was able to quit drugs and cigs because I completely stopped having them. You just can't quit eating. It's a constant struggle. I have not found a psych in my area that specializes in food addiction but I am still looking.

Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you need support.

I was about 3 weeks post-op when I took my boys to a Boy Scout potluck. A room full of teenage boys shoveling food in their faces, plate after plate. Ugh. I had to take a walk.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
