Really Tired After Exercising

Okay guys I'm three weeks out. I've just been doing my elliitcal machine for about 15 to 20 min every morning. I've noticed that I'm extremely tired afterward which lasts all day. I mean I'm just wiped out and I'm back to work. I was wondering if I'm working off too many calories for my body to run. I consume between 600-800 calories, and I burn off about 250 calories with the elliptial which leaves me around 400 calories a day. Unless I drink my calories I cant get any more calories in a day. My carbs are around 30-50 a day. I drink more than 64 ounces a day, I stay thirsty. What could I be doing that's wrong. Also I stall out for about three days, well i did this week and last week. Should I just stop exercising until I can consume more calories, or what else could it be that's leaving me so tired? Do I need to up the carbs with that small amount of time on the elliptical? I havnt noticed a big difference in my weight loss, I worked out every morning and my weight was still stuck for three days, but TOM was here also. But last week I was stalled for three days too with no exercisse, then I lost two pounds in one day. if i'm going to stall anyway regardless of exercices what do I do, is working out making a difference?

Hi Shea, pretty name... I'm surprised that you are able to do anything but walk at this point. My DR said no exercise at all but walking for 8-12 weeks. The elliptical is a pretty good aerobic exercise. Not to scare you, but just within the the last few days, I lost a good friend to a leak (gastric bypass) caused by what might have been to aggressive exercise too early. You are still healing for a minimum of six weeks, listen to your body and slow down.

I know how badly you want the weight to come off and do things right, but you will lose and you will have plenty of time to work out and get toned. Please, Please take care of yourself. I'm not trying to be morbid, but my friend was only 44, her celebration of life is tomorrow and she was like a race horse out of the gate, wanted to do to much to fast.

Thank you. I think you're right. I just may chill with the exercise until I'm at least two months out. i would hate to have something go wrong because of something I'm doing too soon. I'm not thrilled about exercising anyway, so this is actually good news. LOL

You made me laugh ..I think you can still take a nice "smell the roses " kind of 30 minute walk 5 days a week. :-)

One thing that you can try before you exercise is eating a half banana that is smashed up before you exercise. It will give you a boost of Potassium which may help with that tired feeling. It has help me many times on several different diets. Also have you had your blood checked lately to see what you potassium is running.

At only 3 weeks out anything can make you tired - it takes a long time for your body to heal and to get your full energy back! You may benefit from backing off a little to a more gentle form of exercise, at least until you're eating more real food and can get more Protein in. If it's exhausting and you dread doing it, you won't stick with it (at least, that's true for me!) That being said, doing something will help you maintain your muscle mass, which is good for your metabolism. Get out and walk as much as you can.

Also, don't worry about "stalling out" for 3 days or so. You're not necessarily going to drop weight every single day, regardless of how hard you work or how little you eat. I've seen a stall defined as a minimum of 3 weeks (!!). I'm not sure I'd take it that far, but I don't think you're "stalling" if it's only 3 days. You're doing fine!

Being very early out, I felt fatigue A LOT! It's quite normal. I do agree with mentioned above, I think the elliptical might be a little too agressive right now. Stick with walking, and little spurts at a time. Try 3, 10 minute walks per day if that might be better. Good luck!!

Thank you all for your advice. I do get my blood work done on Tuesday so we will see what my levels are then. Thanks for the banana advice. I will slow down and do something lighter for the next few weeks. I do appreciate all the advice.

You're 3 weeks out and you can have a banana? Drool. Who's your surgeon? Mine won't even allow veggies (canned only) or any fruit. I've been doing treadmill (3 minutes the first week) and wimming since week two. Also doing 12 pd bar curls....and I need a huge nap after my workouts. But am noticing I can do more now (almost 5 wks out) and don't nap as long any more. I say hang in.

I am almost 4 weeks out and I have stayed away from the eliptical as I think is puts too much stress on your body. i have stayed with the treadmill and just walking. I get tired from just that and can not imagine how I would feel using my arms and legs. I can have banana as long as it is mashed up soft. I think there is a great difference in the diets from surgeons to surgeons. Do not think that there is much standardized in that area.

Please double check with your surgeon about exercise at this point of your recovery. I was only allowed to walk until at least 6 weeks out. Remember, during the the 6 months of your weight loss, you will lose the most. You are taking in less calories, less carbs and that means you will not have normal energy for vigorous exercise. When I stepped up my exercise plan, I had to increase my calorie and carb intake ( fuel) so I would have the energy. I built a lot of muscle and have toned up nicely but it did slow my weight loss. You can talk to your NUT but I would concentrate on weight loss the first 6 months and mix in the exercise.

I'm just over 4 months out and can't imagine doing elliptical for 20 minutes! I'd be under my bed hiding!! Lol

My doc said walking ONLY till I hit two months and then, taking in my (lack of) fitness level before surgery, gradually work up to other things.

My workouts are 15-30 minutes on the treadmill, then 15-30 minutes on the exercise bike, alternated with weights. I do low weights and high reps because I'm working on toning up my squirrel arms. I had to wait six weeks to even start with the weights, too.

I try to make sure to eat some carbs or fruit on days I work out. Otherwise I end up feeling like a limp dishrag.
