Eating Soft Foods Before Your "technically" Supposed To?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone cheated and started from pureed to soft foods before you were supposed to? I"m a little over 3 weeks out and I don't think I can stomach any more cottage cheese, yogurt, or cream Soup. I've been eating macaroni and cheese and just chewing it really well. what about ground beef? any thoughts?

Hi,

I had my surgery done November 25, 2011, so it's just over 5 weeks for me. To be honest I only did the pureed diet for 2 weeks. It was driving me crazy. I don't think you should try ground beef just yet, it might be a little to dry to go down, but I know you can eat a small salad, just eat one leaf at a time. Hope this helps!

I am doing way more bad than you are. I had my sleeve done on 12/28/2011 and I'm already eating soft foods. I saw my doctor today and told him this and he didn't seem too worried. Key is to make sure it can go down and stay down without any pain or issues and to not overeat in fear of the stomach tearing. With me liquids seem to go right through but mashed broccoli ( only non liquid I've tried ) fills me up super fast, one to two spoons full and I'm done. Also keeps me full for much longer.

You should follow your surgeons diet, but yes, I progressed a bit earlier too. I did 6 days clears, a little more than a week full fluids, and now I'm on fulls/soft foods. I am starting my 4th week. My docs wanted me to wait for 2 weeks on clears (couldn't do it), 2 weeks fulls, 2 weeks pureeds, and 2 mushies.

I was supposed to do two weeks of full liquids then soft/mushies as tolerated. So far the only thing I have a problem with is chicken and turkey! I've even done ground beef without any problems. I try to do one Protein Shake a day, one greek yogurt and one MEAL meal a day. The days I do two MEAL meals I end up feeling a little too stuffed.

My doctor graduates us to soft foods at 2 weeks and a regular diet at 4 weeks.

Soft foods was basically anything except fresh veggies. Then at 4 weeks add in fresh veggies (except celery, corn)

You just really want to be careful and remember that your sleeve is still healing. The food may go down OK and you may feel OK, but your tummy just might not be ready to handle some of the things we want to eat.

This part only lasts a few weeks, so if you are going to go faster than your doctor advises, at least take care that you don't eat things (dry, tough meats, nuts, breads/pasta, fibrous foods etc) that could end up harming you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
