Allergic Reaction Post-op -- Could It Be Whey?

Recommended Posts

So a strange thing has happened to me. I've developed a systemic allergic reaction of some kind in the last several days. The only two changes that I have in my diet are the daily ppi (omeprazole) and my Protein, which is part of all I eat. I am still on liquids, and have added cream Soups a few days ago. I have never had a milk allergy before, but I guess it's all a new world after this surgery. I have been greatly increasing my Protein intake in the past 5-6 days, as I'm able to take in more during the second week post-op. I'm right at 60-70 grams per day, as opposed to 30-35 the first week. So I'm wondering if this has gradually built up and I have an intolerance. My whole body itches, head to toe -- it's awful.

I went out and got some egg Protein Drink powder and some soy Protein Drink powder to try.

Has anyone else developed allergies post-op? We are perplexed! Any thoughts, ideas, etc., are welcome!

Yes I have an allergy to whey, I already two allegra a day. My reaction is my face gets red, and I have to scratch my face. I try to stay away from whey but it is hard. I didn't realize it was whey till after surgery, your diet is so limited it was easy to determine. Good Luck Just watch for breathing problems.

I got the whey Protein nectar that was called Fuzzy Navel that I started taking pre op. It made me break out and I was itchy. I was worried that I had an allergy to the whey protein. The Dr. said that I should try a different type. He didn't think I was allergic to the whey. I tried the kiwi strawberry and then had the chocolate truffle without any problems. It was just the type I seemed to be allergic to. You might want to talk to the dr and see what he says. Good luck.

I have recently developed an allergy... where my face breaks out with hive type things... red/itchy/burning. I do not know what is causing it. It is pretty painful though. I may contact the Doctor soon.

My allergist thought that I was allergic to the whey, but the only 2 times I had an allergic reaction (throat itching and wheezing) was when I drank my nectar Protein drink AND took a ppi (omeprazole) while I was drinking the protein drink. Now that I quit taking the ppi, no more problems. Something about the combination must be causing it. Ask your Dr. about this. I now have to carry an EPI pen so this is nothing to ignore.

Thanks for all the info. My dr. thinks its the ppi, so I'm going to switch to something else. Hope that's it,

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
