Hi there i am on day five and i had a ton of food envy today. I actually have been dreaming about food and in my dream was trying to figure out how to make liquid frosting!! It freaks me out that i will never regain control over food. Help- tell me it gets better!!!

It gets better. For me, when the time came that I could eat all the things I had been wanting, one taste and I didn't want it anymore. For one thing, I was losing weight steadily and didn't want to slow things down. For another, it didn't taste as good as I remembered. I used to have a terrific sweet tooth and now, although dessert sounds appealing in my head, in my mouth it's not that great and I can push the plate away after one bite.

It definitely gets better...and easier. I had horrible head hunger after coming home from the hospital...it seemed like every commercial on TV was food related. I remember seeing a commercial for Laughing Cow cheese and just thinking that if only I could eat a cracker with cheese on it I would be so happy!! LOL! I had dream after dream after dream about food....most revolved around sneaking Big Macs!!

Now I'm almost 8 weeks out, eating almost anything I want (which BTW is not the junk I used to eat) and life is soooo good!!! I don't feel deprived and I feel "normal"....my relationship with food has changed...which I NEVER thought would happen!!

Just hang in there....you'll get there too!!!

I'm two weeks post-op and haven't had this particular experience, but lucked into something while trying to maximize my Protein. This is very dessert-like, and even my husband thinks it tastes really good, so it's something you may want to try.

Use two scoops of the best-tasting Protein shake powder you can find, add 1/4 C each non-fat evaporated skim milk and Greek-style yogurt, and just enough skim milk to make a slightly thin pudding consistency. Add a drop or two of a complementary flavoring (I like cherry or mint flavoring with chocolate Protein mix, but you could use marshmallow, berry, toffee, or any flavoring you like with vanilla mix) and blend until thoroughly mixed.

It tastes a lot like cheesecake, and with many protein mixes having around 20gm of protein per scoop, you end up with a tasty treat that has a total of ~48gm protein that can be split into two Snacks. This can help with the desire for something creamy, and crunchy things will come in a few weeks, they say!

It does get better. I had the most bizarre food dreams for the first 2-3 weeks... one morning I woke up convinced I could email doughnuts, and it was so real that it took a couple of minutes to figure out that it wasn't possible.

I don't even really LIKE doughnuts...

I had constant food dreams that I ate crispy chicken tacos and I would FREAK OUT in my dream because I knew I couldn't eat them and I ruined my sleeve! The nice thing is that when you eat and your full..you are FULL. I had a small cake plate on NYE with bean dip, a meat ball, a piece of ham and a stuffed mushroom and was totally SATISFIED! I was not deprived at all. When I have head hunger, I go for a SF popsicle or SF Jello. Now I can have deli meat so I have really been into thin sliced turkey. Something that won't wreck what I'm working towards.

The head hunger gets better once you can eat real food again. There are days when I still have the head hunger at a year out. Usually I just will eat a bite of what I am wanting and then I am through. My sleeve always wins!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
