You really should follow your doctor's instruction.

But, I decided that for me, I wanted to try it. I have been drinking diet soda since 3 months out & not having any problems. I use it to give me a sweet treat & an alternative to snacking.

It doesn't cause any apparent issues with my sleeve and does not cause me to crave more sweets. I'm very luck in that since I hate coffee & need my caffeine fix in some form.

I tried diet pepsi, mountain dew, sprite, and fanta which i was addicted to before surgery, they tasted soooo bad and i felt every single bubble and felt the bubbles crawl up to my throat and it was just horrific experience, now i just stick to mango juice or Water, my doctor discouraged it overall, but it isnt banned, but it just makes me suffer and doesn't taste that good anymore, so yeahh

I drive a truck all day and used diet mountain dew for the caffeine fix I needed to stay awake. I drank at least 5 soda's a day. Four weeks post-op and I feel No need or craving for diet dew at this point so I just don't drink it.

Weeks 2 and 3 I had to have a afternoon nap and now I feel more energy than I have had in a long time and I think it will get even better as I've read on these forums? So no dew for me.

P.S. I do have 2 cups of coffee in the early morning with my Protein Shake.< /p>

Been drinking sodas since I've been about 3 months out. I'm out now heading into 3 years. They are diet sodas of course and in the beginning I would always defizz mine and take it really slow. . now i don't defizz but still take it really slow. I also have my coffee, alcohol drinks and everything else. . . I'm living my life and am lovin it. . AND LOOK GOOD AT THE SAME TIME! yAHOO!!!! Good luck!

I started drinking diet coke again a couple of months ago. I used to drink it every day, now I drink it maybe once a week and I have found that I really only like fountain diet coke, the stuff in cans and bottles is too fizzy and doesn't feel very good. I also started drinking coffee, again, not every day, but a couple times a week. I haven't noticed any ill effects from caffeine.

Obviously those who are saying "soda", I would strongly suggest you stay away if you mean high test stuff. My program discourages ALL liquid calories, even Soups that are all liquid like Tomato. It's a bang for the buck calorie thing. But if you are talking sugared sodas, they would smack it out of your hand.

My surgeon, on the other hand, has changed his stance. He said he used to say no diet soda but has done a lot of research (he's had this program for 4 years now sleeving folks) and has decided that while he discourages due to the artificial sweetener, he discourages all diet drinks (like ice tea w/ artificial sweetner) as much as soda. As long as you follow the rules and do not drink after eating, he says he's now convinced the carbonation is not going to hurt a healed sleeve.

I have 1 caf free diet coke from McD's each week. I love the freedom and I can't tell a bit of difference. The only caution is that I wait at least 1 hour after eating, not 30 minutes. If I drink it 30 minutes after food, I do again feel restriction so I wait and hour so my sleeve is empty.

I can't speak for everyone here, but I'm pretty sure those that say they are drinking soda are drinking the diet soda. At least that is the case for me. There are no calories in diet soda. It does not cause me to crave foods sweet or otherwise.

Obviously those who are saying "soda", I would strongly suggest you stay away if you mean high test stuff.

I was sleeved in May and tried a sip of soda here and there and it didn't feel good. Last week i tried it again and if I pour it into a cup first (don't drink it out of a can or bottle) it is just fine, the bubbles don't bother me at all. I don't really care for the diet coke or pepsi taste anymore but I have taken a real liking to root beer. So I am going to allow myself to have some every once in awhile, diet of course.

Sugar soda versus diet soda. Zero question that you should avoid all liquid calories (within reason...say some skim milk) after surgery. I don't think everyone who says they drink soda automatically mean they are talking about diet.

What I've realized about soda, is that it can be a trigger for some people. I drink one Diet Dr. Pepper a day at lunch with no issues at all. I still drink all of my Water each day though. For some people, drinking soda causes them to want more of it or it makes them crave sweets. Sodas don't cause me any issues with head hunger. On the other hand, I personally have issues with Peanut Butter. One bite of it causes major head hunger and makes me want a Reese's really bad, so I avoid it. I am sure many people can eat peanut butter with no issues. We are all different. You can try it and see what happens. It may be a trigger for you or it may not.

Not at all...I'm still losing at a relatively steady clip. I don't have any cravings for carbs or bad for me foods after drinking a diet coke.

I only drink diet soda but to answer your question- absolutely not. It is not causing any bad cravings and I am continuing to lose.

Opting for diet soda instead of regular, won't help fight the bulge.

Data from a recent study by the American Diabetes Association shows that while diet sodas may be free of calories, they do not prevent you from gaining weight. In fact, they may contribute to weight gain. Diet soda also contributes to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic conditions.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
