Can't Take In All The Food Required

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 wks post-op tomorrow and on Stage 2 of my diet. Stage 1 was the first 5 days: Clear liquids. Stage 2 is full liquids from a list given to me by Dr.'s office nutritionist for 2 weeks. Stage 3 is pureed for 4 weeks! Followed by 4 more weeks of very soft solids. I am having a hard time with Stage 2 because they ask that I have 3 meals, 3 Snacks. Sample menu calls for the following: Bkft= 1/2 c cream of wheat, 1/2 c skim milk; snack= 1/2 c whey Protein shake; Lunch= 1/2 c strained fat free cream Soup, 1/2 c sugar free pudding; snack= 1/2 c Protein shake; Dinner= 1/2 c cream Soup again, 1/2 c fat free yogurt; snack= 1/2 c Protein shake.

Is it just me or is this a lot of food? Trying to space these out about 2 hrs and trying to get Water in 30 minutes before and after is a chore. I only do 1 of the things they ask at each meal (1/2 c), no way would I have room for a total cup at any meal time. I'm also stuck at a 13lb loss week 1 and nothing week 2. Am wondering if this sounds about right compared to you all's diets or should I be eating less. I'm not hungry so I don't want to eat at times. I also think 4 wks for purees and 4 weeks for very soft solids is a long time before I can try regular food again. Would appreciate your input tremendously.

No way could I have eaten that much at 2 weeks post-op. I barely managed 2 T of Cereal, Soup, or yogurt at a time. Also, do not worry about waiting before and after "meals" for your Water or you will never get it in. You are eating and drinking liquids so just keep drinking all day long. I would start spacing your water when you start soft foods. You might be able to get in 1/4 cup of these full liquids by the end of your first month. Personally, I'd drink more of your Protein Shakes than the sf pudding or cream of wheat--there's no Protein in those and you need protein to heal.

Hey, I am 3 weeks post op and I was told to do stage 1 for 2weeks, stage 2 for 2 wks with just Protein Drinks, 2wks of soft foods stage 3, then stage 4. That does seem like alot of food. I am full after the Protein Drink. I guess each doctor is different. You might want to talk to the nutritionist and see what is recommended.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
