I Am 8 Days Post Op And Eating/hungry Like Crazy Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this is my first post. I am only 8 days out and already feel like I could eat anything in house. Is this normal? How do I keep from ruining my sleeve? I eat bites of everything I feed my son and have horrible back/shoulder pain. How do I stop from feeling so hungry and eating?

I am having the same problem. It is not head hunger, but actual stomach grumbling (I can tell the difference).

Week 1: All Clear liquids, including the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth powder, which packs 21 g of Protein. Ended the week dog weak, tired & feeling like a trip to the bathroom was major physical exertion.

Week 2: Started today...protein shakes made with milk, Tomato Soup. Fatigue is a tiny bit better, but still SO hungry. I've resisted the urge to shove something I can actually chew in my mouth but it is really hard. I see from posts that yogurt worked for some during this period, so I'm going to add that in and see if it helps.

Next week mushies, then the "real stuff."

I'm sure your sleeve is fine, but I, too appreciated the actual description of what is left behind that needs to heal. I didn't have a clear sense either. Still, after seeing that the nutritional requirements seem to be all over the board depending on the doc, I'm not going to stress if I eat something very soft/smooth like yogurt, or cream of wheat (as was mentioned above), applesauce, etc. at this stage. I feel like my body is clearly telling me it needs just a little something more.

I am 3 days post op and while I am not physically hungry at all, I am having horrible cravings for all kinds of food! I am hoping the cravings will pass since I am on Protein Shakes, yogurt, and 4 oz. pureed fruit for the next 3 weeks. solid food just sounds so good! I am also taking my pepcid every day.

Did you mention the back/shoulder pain to your doc? Even your primary would do. That is one one the things I am told I should watch for after surgery and notify my doctor if it continues past 2 days post-op.

I had bad back and shoulder pain and my doc said it was a case of plueresy and very common. Ask him if you can have an injection of Toradol. You will feel great after that. However i agree that you should not be eating solid foods yet and should probably still be on full liquids. Do you have a dietician available in his office?

Hi all, thanks for the replies and I am sorry that it took me awhile to get back. I am now 24 days post- op and I did get all my issues under control. My shoulder pain was a concern for my primary but the suregon assured me it was normal and in the past 4 days has went away ( thank goodness!) I also finally got off the bad food :) my primary thought it was a mix of my blood sugars ( off my meds per suregons request ) and caffeine because I drank coffee to get going in the mornings. I am eating healthy small portion Proteins but I am still interested in other food I just not eating it haha. It's getting easier and I'm so happy I did this for myself.

Just to say not drinking the caffeine made me hungry not the other way around.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
