I Am 8 Days Post Op And Eating/hungry Like Crazy Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this is my first post. I am only 8 days out and already feel like I could eat anything in house. Is this normal? How do I keep from ruining my sleeve? I eat bites of everything I feed my son and have horrible back/shoulder pain. How do I stop from feeling so hungry and eating?

It sounds like you have acid reflex. Some i take prilosec on a daily basis and my hunger has greatly improved. Hope this helps. Welcome to sleeve talk. ;)

I experienced tremendous head hunger at about a week out. Are you sure you're physically hungry? I thought I was but later realized I was just so angry that I couldn't eat what I wanted to eat. Be careful of what you do eat at this stage (I was still on liquids at day 8)....your new stomach is still healing and is probably still swollen. You don't want to do anything that may cause a leak.

Good Luck!!!

The shoulder pain could be gas-have you tried taking any anti-gas medications or walking it off? I have also heard that excess acid can cause hunger like sensation. Did your doctor give you anything? My doctor did not-in fact he was surprised that I had taken Pepcid on my own (I was having horrible heartburn at night after surgery).

Be careful about what you take bites of. As your stomach is still healing you don't want to do anything that could cause it to leak or not heal properly. I was allowed cream Soups, cream of wheat, things like that starting the day after surgery. Maybe a few bites of something filling, but liquidy would help with the desire to eat. Hang in there. In a few weeks you'll be able to eat more normally and this will be nothing but a memory.

im 10 days post op and still on free liquids, i am hungry too and feel like i could eat mushy things however this forum has informed me that it could be the worst thing to do as the staple line is still healing. You and i dont want to ruin our new stomach before we have even had time to use it and lose weight. Good luck but im in the same boat, im hungry my tummy is gurgling i dont feel full on any liquids and it driving me insane :) fingers crossed it stops. All the best :)

Right there with you, 8 days out...also, from colo springs and went to USC in pueblo way back. The head hunger at this point bites. I am trying to remember that this phase will only last so long, you know, and find more satisfying things on the list of stuff I can have. Welcome!

Welcome Amyaviceseeker! I was on liquids at 8 days too. Do you drink enough? Sometimes what we think is hunger is mostly thirst and it is important to keep hydrated. Proteins tend to reduce hunger, so how much Protein to you take in? You will need a diffferent diet to you son's until you get used to your sleeve. Do you have a nutritionist? Would be worth asking him/her.

Yes, drink a ton of liquids, and make sure you're taking an acid preventer (PPI) like prilosec, protonix, etc. I also find that Gaviscon (specifically that brand) of chewable antacids help a lot with the growly tummy/hungry feeling. A lot of times what feels like hunger is actually just acid. Be careful what you eat in the first six weeks, gotta take it easy on that staple line.

Wow thank you all so much! Who knew that there was this much support out here. 1st off, I did have extreme reflux before surgery but my surgeon asked me not to take any meds. I did however take a precious on day 3. I take IBprophin and Tylenol p.m for sleep also. I use my gas- x strips but my shoulder pain still exists. I know I'm not walking as much as I should be but I have my reasons (long story). Now that I have read all your replies I'm wondering if I already messed my new stomach up?! I have ate Pasta bites, rice with Beans, a few chips etc... I feel starving. I can drink my Protein no problem and I drink about 5 gatorades a day. My stomach doesn't hurt and I have never heard anything about me having any staples. Am I missing something? I am very worried.

If you are worried you have damaged your sleeve, go to the doctor and have him do a leak test. STOP EATING SOLID FOODS. PERIOD. It is too early for you to do that. You could get things caught in your staple line and possibly cause an infection or leak. Yes, you have a line of staples the length of your stomach. While that line of staples is healing, you need to be on liquids, then full liquids, then mushies. Nothing you mentioned you are taking bites of is OK. You need to be drinking Protein Drinks and clear fluids. Maybe some SF Jello, or maybe yogurt. Ask your doctor. When I would get hungry(which was acid), I would take a GASX strip and drink either warm broth or warm tea. I would drink my Protein drinks and calorie free liquids (Propel, etc). I was prescribed FAMOTIDINE (pepcid) morning and evening and I took a prilosec in the evening. Don't mean to be harsh - I am just worried you are going to hurt yourself. Please take care and let us know how you are doing. Good Luck!

You shouldn't be taking ibuprofen without specific permission from your surgeon, and I also wonder why he doesn't want you taking anti-acid medications?? If you had reflux already, you need to be on a PPI in my opinion. But you could at least try the Gaviscon. And you should stick with your diet as outlined, the hunger will fade over the next couple of weeks anyhow, especially if you treat the acid issue. I would really stay away from things like white carbs (Pasta, rice) and snacky crap like chips for a LONG time, like until you've reached goal. Those will really hinder your weight-loss.

Good luck! :)

Ibuprophen is another no-no post-op due to increased risk of bleeding, like asprin. Tylenol is safe. I would agree that you should back off the solids and be sure to take a PPI like prilosec, etc.

Good luck!

Thank you all so much. I will start taking my prescription ppi and no more IBprophin. I also have just spent 15 mins looking up staples and I'm shocked I had no idea that was done to me. My process went by so fast I only met with the surgin once then again for 5 mins after I was leaving the hospital. I will no longer eat any solid foods but it will be very hard, I honestly feel like my belly rumbles in hunger and I have to eat. I have 85 lbs to loose which I felt would be no problem given my motivation before surgery, now I feel hopeless and scared that I have already ruined my sleeve.

Sweetie, your sleeve is fine, and if it's not, you will definitely know something's wrong. So just watch how you're doing and be careful. You have most definitely NOT ruined your sleeve, I can assure you of that. Just hang in there through the 'hell weeks' and you will see it work amazingly well. You're doing great, just keep up the good work and stay away from the bad foods. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
