Enjoying Food And Cooking Again!

Recommended Posts

I'm four weeks out and just starting to cook again this week as I'm able to eat soft meats and mushies. I'm a young hispanic woman that prides myself on preparing traditional dinners and eating as a family every night.

While I do not dictate to my hubby and kids what to eat, (they are not overweight) I do want to incorporate healthier cooking for them as well.

Yesterday I made myself (on my new george foreman grill that I love!) a tilapia filet and grilled zucchini. Omg yumm!! I was only able to eat half of the filet and a few pieces of zucchini, but I was full and feeling good. :) I made my family some grilled sausage and rice.

Tonight I made myself a mini meatloaf with italian greenbeans. Only ate a third of the meatloaf and about eight greenbeans, but boy, happy tummy!! My family ate picadillo with sopa only I threw in loads of chopped veggies that they didn't notice, but ate up!

I'm just loving that this is so "do-able" if that's a word!! I went from eating tortillas every night to eating new healthier foods that are so easy to prepare and taste so good. Yay!

That's why I'm so happy with my choice of the sleeve. My mom was banded over a year ago and she still struggles when she eats, she sometimes gets sick, and it just doesn't seem like she's eating normally.

I enjoy cooking for my family too and it's nice to have a small serving of what they are having (whether it's a potato, a small salad, or cooked veggies with my protein) - it really makes it feel like you're living a normal, "thin person's" life. That's the ultimate goal, right? To get to the point where you can eat normally and in the quantities that "normal" people should be eating.

Good for you that your sleeve is tolerating all the things you like!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
