I Think I May Have Stretched My Gastric Sleeve...

Recommended Posts

My doc is pretty adamant that all the talk about stretching the sleeve is bunk.

He says maybe a tiny amount, but nothing that would be statistically significant.

He basically says with a clenched fist, this is how small your stomach will be for the rest of your life.

If that's true, I'm not sure how people start out only able to tolerate 400 calories, and then later they note they are taking in 1000 to 1400 calories a day? By eating constantly all day long? idk.

The stomach is swollen at first and can hold less. Grazing does allow one to eat a LOT more over time. I am a good example of the effects of this! I am now keeping track of meals and Snacks, and this is making a big difference. Even doing this, it is EASY for me to eat 1000-1400 cals a day. I can hit 2000 grazing. Not good! My stomach only holds about 3/4 cup of solid food... more if its Soup or sliders... In the morning a little less.

There is so much contradiction about whether or not we can stretch our sleeve that I have come to the conclusion myself that there is a little stretch with the sleeve and it also depends on the size of the bougie and how much fundus is left attached to the stomach. I for one am going to be a bit conservative on this and work really hard at keeping my food intake down. There is no empirical studies that demonstrate that the sleeve is stretchable. I do keep reading that the fundus is the stretchy part.

I've stretched mine so it can happen. I don't mind though because I like to eat around people without feeling self conscious about only fitting 2 bites. I'm still skinny so I can appreciate a little stretch as long as I am eating healthy foods

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
